The genus Miyabea is a small genus classified in Leskeaceae, Bryopsida. Three species have been recognized in this genus in Japan, and all of them are recorded from eastern Asia. We made careful observation of many specimens identified as Miyabea thuidioides and reached a conclu-sion that they are merely young plants of Miyabea fruticella, the commonest species in the genus. We also found that some specimens collected from calcareous rocks in central Japan, which had been identified and reported as M. thuidioides by Noguchi in 1991, are quite a different moss, and should be described as a new species, Miyabea naganoi Z. Iwats., H.Kiguchi & Tad.Suzuki. M. naganoi is easily separated from the other two Miyabea species by its sparsely branched stems and coarsely dentate leaf apices.

A collection of 53 specimens of Fissidens were made in South Sulawesi, Indonesia by the well known authority on Viola, Mr. T. Kamiyama. The collection represents 21 species of which 10 are additions to the moss flora of Indonesia. A key to the species, their distribution, and descriptions and illustrations of some species are included.

Trematodon hakusanensis H.Akiyama was described from Mt. Hakusan, central Japan in Acta Phytotaxonomica Geobotanica 35; 21 in 1984. When we studied Japanese species of Trematodon, we carefully studied the type specimen of this species. Dry plants of the type specimen looked different from other species of the same genus. However, thoroughly wet plants are very difficult to separate from those of T. ambiguus (Hedw.) Hornsch.

In Japan, many beginners and some professional bryologists use frequently the Japanese names of mosses. However, no bryologist has tried to make a list of Japanese names of mosses. In this list, some 5000 Japanese names of mosses proposed mostly by bryologists were listed together with their respective scientific names.
