The genus
Miyabea is a small genus classified in Leskeaceae, Bryopsida. Three species have been recognized in this genus in Japan, and all of them are recorded from eastern Asia. We made careful observation of many specimens identified as
Miyabea thuidioides and reached a conclu-sion that they are merely young plants of
Miyabea fruticella, the commonest species in the genus. We also found that some specimens collected from calcareous rocks in central Japan, which had been identified and reported as
M. thuidioides by Noguchi in 1991, are quite a different moss, and should be described as a new species,
Miyabea naganoi Z. Iwats., H.Kiguchi & Tad.Suzuki.
M. naganoi is easily separated from the other two
Miyabea species by its sparsely branched stems and coarsely dentate leaf apices.
