I propose to offer, not an opinion, but a factual report on what is considered the current style of written English used as a means of international communication in business. My experience as a businessman engaged in international commerce extends well over 45 years, and this makes me feel sufficiently, if not fully, qualified in making such report which you may regard, if you so wish, as coming from a man “talking shop.”

In order to avoid possible misunderstanding of what is meant by the term ENGLISH as used in the paper, I wish to explain my position briefly. It is said that some 250 million people use English language as their primary or mother tongue, spoken variously in cultivated styles, local dialects and sub-dialects, widely scattered throughout the world. It is also said that 600 million people of non-English speaking origin could be reached in this language, but usually spoken with marked traits of the racial characteristics stemmed from their own languages, Japlish among them. The thing to be borne in mind is that when English is spoken, whether he be a Briton, Irish, American, Australian, or non-English speaking national, it works as a means of communication without depending on an aid of interpretor despite of diversified ways it is spoken. In view of this fact and for all practical purposes, I regard English as a world language, over and above any racial or national distinctions.
