    This study was designed to investigate the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on bone formation at subperiosteal sites in Wistar rats, utilizing gelatin hydrogel (Gel) containing bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). The experimental sites were divided into four groups: Implantation with Gel containing BMP-2 (BMP group) and Gel only (Gel group), LIPUS treatment was performed every three days after implantation with Gel containing BMP-2 (Li-BMP group) and Gel only (Li-Gel group).

    Three weeks after implantation, new bone formation was observed in all groups. The thickness of new bone (TNB) in the Li-BMP and BMP groups was significantly greater than that in the Li-Gel and Gel groups (p < 0.05). The TNB in the Li-Gel group was significantly greater than that in the Gel group (p < 0.05). The newly formed bone in the Li-BMP group was nearly integrated with the original bone.

    These results suggest LIPUS enhances bone formation and accelerates bone integration when used with gelatin hydrogel containing BMP-2.

    We performed this experiment using 4 kinds of dentifrice containing hydroxyapatite as a component and coral-derived hydroxyapatite. These are insoluble in water, and cell viability was investigated using the three-dimensional culture method with collagen in addition to the two-dimensional culture method. As a result, the cell viability of three paste-type dentifrices was extremely low, but that of one powder-type dentifrice was relatively high. In addition, the cell viability of coral-derived hydroxyapatite was similar to that in the control group. However, strongly cytotoxic products may markedly influence bacteria; they may be appropriate for use in the oral cavity where many microorganisms exist. The cell viability of the eggshell-derived powder-type dentifrice was higher than the values of the paste-type products, and this dentifrice should be selected in accordance with purpose. In addition, a coral-derived product adsorbs bacteria, pigments, odor, lipids, glucose, and protein easily, and may be applied to dentifrices in the future.

    The oral commensal Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) is critical in biofilm development. Although differences in biofilm formation among subspecies have been reported, detailed analyses of the isolates are scarce. The present study evaluated biofilm formation in four Fn subspecies (Fn animalis, Fn nucleatum, Fn polymorphum, and Fn vincentii) using crystal violet staining and fluorescence microscopy on novel cultivation platforms. The type strains showed notable variability, with Fn nucleatum and Fn vincentii forming strong biofilms, whereas Fn animalis and Fn polymorphum were weaker. The Isolates displayed a broad range of biofilm capacities, in some instances surpassing those of the type strains. Our findings demonstrated significant heterogeneity in biofilm formation across Fn subspecies, thus providing insights into their ecological and disease-associated dynamics.
