A significant issue in assessing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)patients is evaluating the ASD traits in the background to the patients’ symptoms and problem behaviors. We developed an ASD trait scale to comprehensively evaluate ASD by considering self-understanding abilities and socio-
cultural influences, which have been problematic for conventional questionnaires. InStudy 1, we developed the scale items based on the diagnostic criteria of ASD and existing scale items. University students (N=279)responded to these items. The results indicated a three-factor structure : “Pedantic behaviors” “Weak situational awareness”, and “Passive interpersonal interactions”, with each factor having high internal consistency. In Study 2, university students (N
=205)participated in a study for assessing the relationship between the ASD Trait Scale and AQ (The Autism-Spectrum Quotient). Results indicated a weak to moderate correlation, which supported the concurrent validity of the scale. These results indicate that the scale can be useful as a self-administered questionnaire for quickly evaluating ASD traits. It is suggested that
the scale can be used to assess ASD individuals in the future, including people with subthreshold ASD.
