The change of particle size and disorder of illite by treatment with 4 N hydrochloric acid was examined by X-ray diffraction method. The value of particle size of the original specimen is obtained as 89 A, and it changes to 53 A after treatment for 9 hours. Disorder also seems to decrease with increasing duration of treatment.
The change of activation energy and order of reaction was studied by the Freeman and Carroll's method. The value of activation energy of the untreated specimen is 30.7 kcal/mole and it decreases to 22.9 kcal/mole, when treated for 9 hours. Order of reaction is 1 for all the specimens.
The results obtained in this work seem to show that the mechanism of the acid dissolution is complicated complex of homogeneous and heterogeneous processes.

The structural change and the adsorption character on heating in vacuo of sepiolite from Kuzuu (Tochigi Pref.) and Korea were studied.
By the treatment in vacuo, it has been recognized that a part of sepiolite lattice changes into sepiolite “anhydride” at 200°C and the 1 st. dehydration of bound water occurs between 200°and 260°C. The dehydration curve treated in vacuo is very sharp. The BET surface area also remarkably decreases when sepiolite treated in vacuo above 200°C.
These results show that the channel of sepiolte is sealed when a part of sepiolte transforms into sepiolte “anhydride”, as a result, the molecules of adsorbate are not adsorbed into the channel.

The heavy metal ion adsorbent was synthesized from taffacius shale distributed from Chikuho-coal-field by the heat treatment with sodium hydroxide and sodium chloride solutions. The properties of the products were determined by X-ray diffraction method, the measurement of cation exchange capacity and the adsorption of the heavy metal ion, and it was found that the products are good adsorbent for the heavy metal ion.
