The influence of Na and P on the refinement and spheroidization of primary Si in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was studied using Al-12.6%Si-0.26%Na alloy and Na flux for Al-23%Si base metals. The base metals were prepared using high purity aluminum with semiconductor grade silicon, and commercial grade aluminum and metallic silicon for discussing the influence of phosphorus on primary Si morphology.

For base metals with base metal P content exceeding several ppm, the primary Si was refined and spheroidized with the Al-Si-Na alloy. On the contrary, when the P content was less than 1ppm, the primary Si was neither refined nor spheroidized. The shape of primary Si in usual hypereutectic Al-Si alloys or P treated ones was regular octahedron, but cuboctahedron in spheroidized ones. Cuboctahedron Si was confirmed to be bicrystalline due to the adhesion of Na for EBSD and EPMA.
