This paper presents a control for the starting of a brushless DC motor for a refrigerator with a variable-speed compressor. Because of its superiority in efficiency and noise with low speed operation, we chose the reciprocating compressor. However, in the case where we adopted a brushless DC motor for the reciprocating compressor, we encountered two problems. One problem was at the starting of the brushless DC motor, and the other problem was at the lubrication of the compressor. At first, because the starting torque necessary for a reciprocating compressor is large, there ware some cases in which we could not start the motor correctly. Against this problem, we developed a control algorithm that makes the starting torque suitable, and then we developed a control algorithm that fixes the rotor to a fixed position before starting it. On the other hand, when starting a motor with a low speed operation, the quantity of ubricating oil is insufficient. Against this problem, we developed a control algorithm to help to promote lubrication. By solving these problems, we were able to develop an inverter reciprocating compressor system that has sufficient reliability. And we adopted this technology for tine first time in the refrigerator industiy.
