The lingual orthodontic technique of Fujita uses a mushroom archform because of the lingual tooth surface morphology. However, we found that if we cut the clinical crowns of cast models, the buccolingual distances at the gingival margin did not vary substantially. This let us to conclude that straight arch wires could be used in lingual orthodontics, if placed as close to the gingival margin as possible.
We determined the ideal bracket positions by measuring cast models of post treatment cases, and then, the prototype preadjusted lingual bracket were developed and used clinically.
We suggested that the lingual straight arch wire appliances would offer various advantages. We will improve the bracket design and mechanics more usefully. In this literature, we will introduce new techniques in lingual orthodontics.
