Gini's concentration ratio G is formulated in terms of a cumulative distribution function. The formula is quite simple and makes it easier to calculate values, as well as to investigate the usefulness of the ratio. In addition, a kind of Moment Problem is raised concerning Drewnowski's equality index D which is defined as D=1-G. An application of the formula to life tables showed that the index worked effectively as to measure equality of length of life. Numerical quadrature is briefly discussed for an approximation of the calculation in the use of life tables.

Counting cells in a photomicrograph of a tissue section, we frequently encounter the cells riding on the boundary lines of the quadrate. In this paper we proposed a method for counting those cells and discussed the edge effect in the estimation of the number of cells. The cells on the boundary lines were counted as the fraction: one by the number of portions divided with the boundary lines. By this method the variance of the estimator was smaller than by the Thoma-Zeiss method.

The present paper proposes some methods of statistical analysis for so called multiple response items (mentioned as “Mult Response” in SPSS manual (Hull and Nie [3])), which has been analyzed only descriptively. The proposed methods include asymptotic interval estimation and hypothesis testing for proportions of categories within one item and between two items, some association measures and their asymptotic interval estimation. The asymptotic theory is developed under the assumption of a multinomial distribution for frequencies of category combinations by using the δ-method.

The Zellner's estimator for two-equation seemingly unrelated regression model is considered. We express the Edgeworth approximation of the distribution function of the “unrestricted” estimator in terms of the canonical correlation coefficients between regressors in both equations. Based on the resulting approximate formula, we examine analytically the effects of non-orthogonal regressors on the pdf of the unrestricted Zellner estimator. For a special case, the effect is examined numerically by a Monte Carlo experiment.

Most work on reliability analysis assumes binary state spaces of the system and its components. In the practice, components deteriorate from perfect functioning to complete failure, passing through several intermediate deteriorating states. This paper considers general multistate coherent systems and proves the existence theorem of series and parallel multistate coherent systems, the IFRA and NBU closure theorems, and the fact that the preservation of IFR property determines the structure of a coherent system uniquely as a series system. Furthermore a generalization of the concept of modules and hazard transform is presented.
