It was in 1920 that the first modern population census was taken in Japan. Since then the regular population census has been conducted every five years. The number of enumeration items has increased to cope with a remarkable change of the social, economic condition. On the other hand, the vital registration system has a longer history but it was remodelled in 1898. After the end of World War II, population and labour force statistics have been remarkably strengthened quantitatively and qualitatively. For example, the Labour Force Survey and Employment Status Survey were begun to collect statistical information on labour force in detail. Also various data on labour force are collected by some government offices in relation to their work, for example, by Ministry of Labour, Ministry of International Trade and Industry and so on. But this paper covers only the above-mentioned basic statistics which are compiled by the Statistics Bureau, Management and Coordination Agency and Ministry of Health and Welfare.

This paper deals briefly with the history, scope and categories that comprise Japan's agricultural statistics, and the problems which demand attention when using the data. Particular attention will be given to problems such as (1) the underestimation of the agricultural production statistics by the government before World War II, (2) the conceptual discrepancy in definition between the Farm Household Economy Survey and the Census of Agriculture and Forestry over what constitutes full-time and part-time farm households, (3) new directions for the future development of agricultural statistics.

In the present paper, changes in belief system, ways of thinking and emotional attitude of the Japanese over 30 years in post-war Japan are statistically discussed as a branch of statistical study of national character.
The data, which are analyzed in the paper, are based on the continuing nation wide random sample surveys which have been conducted every five years over 30 years since 1953 in Japan by the Research Committee on the Study of Japanese National Character of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. The importance of the changes in belief systems and ways of thinking is insisted. It is remarked that only. the simple tabulations by various breakdowns and simple cross-tabulations among the 2 or 3 questions do not always reveal the changes of belief systems and ways of thinking. The statistical method or principal component analysis of categorical data, which is called theory of quantification of response pattern (third method of quantification) and equivalent to Benzécri's correspondence analysis, is effectively adopted to reveal them. The consistency and the features of change of them over 30 years in post-war Japan emerge.
