    Globalisation has led to an ever-growing demand for global human resources equipped with comprehensive skills. In AY2014, the College of Information Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University launched a faculty-led overseas internship program. The program aims to foster global human resources demanded in today’s global community. This presentation introduces the internship program and discusses the results of a questionnaire survey conducted in AY2018. The questionnaire examined how the program affects participants. Results show the program has a positive impact on students.

    Global Project Based Learning (gPBL) is the activity aiming to enhance students for working under a global environment which hosted by Shibaura Institute of Technology. The members consist of professors, staffs, and Teaching Assistants (TAs) have to work together throughout this program. TA is one of the important person responsible in several roles to prepare and support gPBL in every activity. This paper describes the history, activities and learning outcomes from the TAs’ point of view towards activities supported by TAs. Those activities were the great booster in the learning of participants and became the learning of TAs from the process of preparation, support until the end of each activity. The research was conducted through the post-gPBL outcome assessment and questionnaire. The questionnaire was employed to assess the perspectives of participants who joined the program. Finally, the results of learning outcomes and questionnaire responses showed that participants have improved their learning skills. Especially, working in a multi-culture and interdisciplinary team and building the international friendship networks through proceeding the provided group activities.

    This paper discussed achievements of active learning for 21 multinational students from Mekong countries and Japan to think about global engineers through lecture and group work (GW) on SDGs and Society 5.0, which took place in the academic year of 2018 at Niigata University. The active learning made the students increase their awareness of the importance for global engineers to develop knowledge and skills in science and technology, to learn social needs, to gain basic competencies for working persons and to have a positive attitude. In addition, it was the most significant change for students to gain SDGs, global engineers, Society 5.0, or other new information, as well as to have social contribution and wider perspectives. This result implicates that most of the students understood and emphasized the importance of the relationship between engineering and society. Furthermore, the students rated this active learning as useful as a pre-study for a global PBL-type GW internship.

    In Japan, the education system has had more and more focus on learning achievements than before because Japanese government have to take more responsibility for justifying the national budget for education, and also because the maturity and the variation of academic skills and generic skills are becoming diverse among university students due to the globalization. As you might know, the financial situation of Japanese Government has been getting worse. Accordingly, discussions on the measurement method of learning achievements are intense. The assessment for generic skills, which is called PROG (Progress Report on Generic Skills), is one of the most popular measurement methods of learning achievements among institutions of higher education in Japan, as it has been recognized to be a unique assessment securing objectivity and the ease of operation. We would like to introduce PROG itself, and the use case of PROG, which had been applied for the measurement of the achievement of international PBL, outlining PROG’s distinctive features of measurement method and the validity of its outcomes.

    With the current enthusiasm and energy for study abroad and campus internationalization, US universities are in a strong position to fulfill their goals as stated in various mission statements and formal addresses. Statements that promise leadership in diverse and dynamic global economies, internationalized curricula, participation in more global learning opportunities both on campus and abroad, and calls to investigate current issues in contemporary civilization and ideological differences that separate peoples of the world are often ideal, but in reality are used mainly for marketing purposes. While it is true that students benefit from cross-cultural and linguistic exchanges, they must also learn how to analyze the various underpinnings and ramifications of internationalization in an era of globalization. As our need to be multilateral, multilingual, multiperspectived and multicultural increases, so does our need to recognize the expertise of our faculty and our international colleagues and students, on campus and off. After all, the faculty provide the sustained educational environments in which students will begin to appreciate the complexity of global integration but also develop skills to navigate it successfully.

    Specified nonprofit corporation Happy Road Net is an organization that has been providing high school students in Hama-dori (coastal area), Fukushima Prefecture with opportunities for activities since before the Great East Japan Earthquake. After that, we are actively working on radiation education, decontamination, decommissioning, intermediate storage facilities, and community building for high school students in order to develop human resources for disaster area reconstruction. As a local high school teacher, I have cooperated with various events of Happy Road Net so far. In particular, we held a disaster prevention high school summit, in which high school students in Fukushima prefecture and students attending high school adjacent to a nuclear power plant think about energy and disaster prevention and dispatched high school students to Belarus for three years to learn about decontamination and radiation education. This summer, we plan to send high school students to England to learn about decommissioning at Sellafield.

    The participants of the Tohoku University exchange program with the University of Science and Technology in Beijing are first year students from the Department of Engineering. The program requires the students to take their research from the Team-based Engineering Design Course through to the next logical step in the research process: the presentation stage. Each student works on their own presentation with the help of a native speaker, and then spends a considerable amount of time together with the other students in the group working to improve their performance. This unique combination of steps provides the students with instruction on many aspects of presenting research, many hours of proactive teamwork, access to a number of other research fields in English, and many hours of English practice. As well as making new Chinese friends, the experience provides our students with a deeper understanding of the research process, a strong sense of accomplishment, a network of like-minded motivated contemporaries from various fields, and a commitment to learning English.

    This paper shows the outline of Philippines' first microsatellite project. The project PHL-MICROSAT started in 2015 and finally launched total 2 satellites, DIWATA-1 and DIWATA-2, in this 4 years. They are now being operated by satellite ground station in Metro Manila, and they have demonstrated the feasible performance for various monitoring applications such as urban area, vegetation, flood, active volcano, etc. The joint team is consist of 4 organizations and universities from Philippines and Japan. Tohoku University is in charge of education for young engineers in satellite bus system development and flight operations as well as two satellite assembly and tests. In this 4 year activities, this international collaborative project has achieved the remarkable success in the education of young professional engineers not only for students stayed in Japan but also for every participants in Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Philippines, and University of the Philippines Diliman.

    The new industrial revolution has put forward new demands and challenges to engineering education. It makes engineering education stepped into a new era of “Returning of engineering”. The engineering thinking and engineering culture should be rooted in the whole society, in order to construct the engineering view of humanism and practicalism educational thought in sustainable development society. Although Chinese engineering education has entered the “first phalanx” of global engineering education, there are still many problems to be solved in engineering talent training. We practiced research-oriented learning into the engineering thinking cultivation for middle school students, and also built the blended learning environment based on frontier interdisciplinary project guidance for higher education and continuing education. To construct a comprehensive and professional training system in lifelong learning, it is necessary to advocate the total engineering education.

    The practical R&D projects conducted among private companies and university laboratories contains the educational factors for students who learning engineering skills and knowledge. The authors established a novel educational program called “Smart Dormitory” as one of the educational reform activities, where the students can freely discuss, plan, measure and estimate their own engineering activities by themselves. For an example, the authors focus on the students who built a team together in a certain laboratory studying forefront scientific researches on superconductivity. The program has been characterized as a kind of research internship programs nurturing the leadership for elite students. The students were assigned the scientific presentations on their research results in certain international meetings, which enhanced their motivation to scientific studies.

    The author has an opportunity to give a talk in one-day courses for heat treatment engineers. The aim of this course is to explain about heat treatment simulation based on the finite element method and its applications. An introductory part of the course uses teaching materials to intuitively understand complex phenomena induced from elasticity, thermal expansion and plasticity. These materials, which were reported previously, include a crystal model based on knowledge of both mechanics of materials and materials science. The author has expanded the materials to phenomena including not only elasticity, thermal expansion and plasticity but also creep which occurs generally at high temperature and in a prolonged time. Although the crystal models are useful to understand an essence of the phenomenon, an experiment has been conducted additionally. The devised materials may be meaningful for engineers involved in manufacturing techniques such as casting, plastic working, machining, welding, and design of machines and processes operating at high temperatures.

    Educational effect of so-called STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) education through participating a design competition for students is widely recognized. In this paper we introduce the organization and the structure of International Molecular design competition (BIOMOD) which becomes an influential student competition attracting many young generations to molecular nanotechnology.
