Machine mechanism models, which were imported from Germany in 1903, are preserved at Kyoto University. A German company, Gustav Voigt Company, used to produce and export these models around the globe, and many of them are preserved in the United States at Cornell University. Recently, it became clear that similar machine mechanism models are preserved at three Taiwanese universities (NCKU, NTUT, and NTU). They were produced by Shimadzu Corporation in 1913. In other words, this is an example of technology transfer, that is, the (Germany) → [Japan, (U.S.A.)] → (Taiwan). In this example, it is made clear that the models sold from Japan to the Taiwanese universities were not only copies, but included original ideas of Shimadzu Corporation. It is thought that the import and export of machinery in Taiwan increased rapidly those days and at the same time, these machine mechanism models were used extensively for education.
