The authors have proposed a new technique to improve the current collection performance of pantographs. For this purpose, the pan springs, which are usually coil springs, are replaced with variable stiffness device. The device is comprised of two air springs facing each other. The stiffness of the device can be varied by changing the air pressure in the chambers. We install the device into a pantograph and control the compliance characteristics of the pantograph. This paper presents the experimental results of the compliance characteristics control of the pantograph using variable stiffness devices.

In this paper, we study the rocking motion of the structure that is a rigid body and supported by nonlinear springs and dashpots. We consider the rocking motion of this structure which is horizontally and vertically excited. The important physical parameters in this study are the vertical displacement of the center of gravity and angular displacement. We investigate the free rocking motion and the effects of nonlinear springs and dashpots on these parameters.

In this study, damping properties of particles damper are investigated experimentally. The shaft of the damper is vibrated with constant amplitude and the damping force is measured. Particles in the damper are made of glass or steel. It is shown that the damping energy changes according to the kind and the diameter of particles.

We investigate the properties of resistance force of a shock absorber utilizing magnetic functional fluids having both micrometer-size and nanometer-size magnetic particles. The properties of the damper depend on mixing ratio of micrometer-size and nanometer-size magnetic particles. The resistance force can be controlled by applying magnetic field.

Tensegrity structure is constructed from small number of compression members like a rigid rod, and a lot of tension materials like a wire. Compared with other kinds of structures, such as truss structure the tensegrity structure is more lightweight, resists mechanical shock and has large internal space. Therefore, this structure is suitable for temporary housing or basic module of large space structure. However, the construction and the dismantling of the tensegrity structure requires a lot of people and special knowledge. In case of space structure, it is required that it is a compact and lightweight structure for efficient transportation. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the lightweight deployable structure with a simple assembly system. However, for the development of this structure, we should analyze the deployment process of tensegrity structure. In this study, simulation for design of effective automatic deployment tensegrity structure and the trial production of light deployment mechanism are discussed.

To design a perfect control of 2-axis arm mechanism is final target of this study. To achieve this target, firstly I performed precise action analysis of this mechanism. And I recorded motion of 2-axis arm mechanism. Then I compare the actual motion of mechanism with motion calculated by the theory of analysis. From this result, I discuss the accuracy of motion analysis of the 2-axis arm mechanism.

Kendo is a Japanese bamboo sword-fighting sport where protective armours are used. When you make a strike, you have to strongly step forward with the right foot after kicking the ground strongly with the left foot. For this action to be successful, muscular strength and lower limbs- muscle power is required. So far in the research of the Kendo competition, the measurement of floor reaction force which uses force plate was too much. However, the evaluation of power applied within the living body wasn't almost carried out. Therefore, in order to evaluate the power applied within the living body, we measured the locus and the floor reaction force of the stepping and the kicking action between amateurs and rank holders. In this research, from the measurements of the stepping and kicking movements, we directly measured the locus, angle of each joint, floor reaction force and floor reaction force moment, and from this data we evaluated the moment acting in each joint and the consumed energy acting each muscle.

In recent years, the automatic looms are operated with higher speed for effective mass productions. As a result, the heald frame is overloaded and may result in its failure. It is suggested as one of failure causes that due to high speed operation of the automatic looms the inherent frequency of heald frame agrees with its operating frequency, thus inducing a resonance vibration. In the present study, first, the inherent vibrations were simulated by the FEM analysis which was confirmed with accuracy, conducting the experimental modal analyses. Subsequently, the vibrations of the heald frame under practical use operations were measured, and thus the range of critical operation speed inducing large amplitude vibrations was clearly addressed, which well coincides with the inherent frequency of the heald frame. In addition, the countermeasures to increase the critical operation speed were carefully examined for structures and materials of the heald frame.

In order to improve sound transmission loss (TL) of panels, equipment of energy-absorbing material in peripheral parts of the panel may be effective. Based on this idea, we conducted fundamental test with beam structure, both side of which were supported on contact with silicone gel. Here, we adopted the new method for TL estimation which is based on experimental modal test by impact hammer. The advantage of this method is that in the process of TL estimation, modal parameters which contribute to sound transmission, are achieved. In the application of this method to the beam model, we confirmed that equipment of silicone gel in the supports increases modal damping of beam structure, implying the improvement of TL of the panel.

Shell structures are often employed in mechanical structures. The vibration energy flow in curved shell, the extensional wave occurs in addition to flexural wave, which directly affects the noise from the shell. Previous researches reported that the extensional wave little affects the noise but interacts the flexural wave and complicated transmission paths in curved shells by Vibration Intensity (VI) method which is one of the techniques to visualize vibration transmission paths. However, there are unknown characteristics of vibration transmission paths in the curved shell. This research employed L-shaped shell models with five different curvature radii to one direction as FEM analysis models and researched characteristics of vibration transmission by VI method. The results of the flexural VI and extensional VI show that the vibration energy conversion is more enhanced for smaller curvature radius due to the occurrence of the extensional wave in curved shell.

This paper presents an acitve boundary control (ABC) method of a three dimensional rectangular enclosure and to clarify fundamental properties of the control system. Firstly, a transfer matrix method for the target system is introduced to describe the dynamics in the enclosure. This is followed by the derivation of an active boundary control laws and its comparison with active wave control laws. This study addresses validity of generating a vibration-free state in the designated area of a target plate for sound power reduction. The sound occurs from vibration on structure, hence, sufficient attenuation of acoustic power is assumed to be achieved by producing vibration-free state in the structure. In this study, the progressive wave control is employed to produce almost vibration-free state where some sound reduction can be expected. First, considering a simply supported, thin, lossless, steel rectangular plate, the solution of wave element is derived and sound power emitting from a target structure into free space in the case is defined. Next, the methodology of blocking the progressive wave is proposed. Then, finally, numerical simulation is conducted to confirm the produced quiet zone on the plate using the wave control method and to clarify the performance for suppression of the sound power.

This paper discusses a new method for structural intensity measurement based on the modal expansion of structural intensity for flexural vibration on beams. The intensity field indicates the magnitude and the direction of vibratory energy flows at any point in a structure. The sensor array which is composed of two or four accelerometers is often used to measure the intensity vector at any point. On the other hand, we had proposed the modal expansion of intensity. The expansion can be used to estimate the intensity field from the modal properties evaluated by the experimental modal analysis. In this paper, we propose a new measurement method for intensity on beam and discuss the detail condition of the method. Then the numerical and experimental demonstrations are carried out to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

This paper concerns two new dam construction methods, the full face excavation method and the concrete method using bulldozer-mounted vibrators. We explain why these two methods were speedily transferred among Japan's electric power companies and general contractors. This report describes the aim and target of the technical section on Brunel's spirit for promoting innovative monodzukuri. At first. a summary of activities of the fore technical section on the history and engineering of Brunels (started on November 1. 2003 and ended on 31 October 2008) has been described. The activities of the technical section were practically achieved during six years. In 2006, the 200-year anniversary of Brunel's birth was well done. The atmospheric railway model was made with high school students. Brunel's wax mannequin was also made for promoting familiarization of young Brunel as well. In the new technical section, five subjects have been scoped: publicity, designing, carrying over, application, and PDCAs. These are aim to promote the monodzukuri spirit for Japanese young engineers and students through studying Brunel's works. The technical section have be re-run on 1^<st> April 2010 for five years by 31^<st> March 2015.

For beginners in mechanical engineering, it seems difficult to suppose motion of each element that composes a certain mechanism. Therefore, we have developed a CAI system for simulating 3-dimensional mechanism construction for learning mechanism. This system simulates the behavior of the mechanism by treating mechanical elements as simplified blocks. In the present study, we have implemented a 4-bar linkage mechanism to learn about converting the motion. The positions of each link in the system are determined automatically based on the information on the driver link for the convenience of users since a number of parameters are required to linkage mechanism. The user interface is designed from the viewpoint of learning, so that the driver and the fixed link are specified in advance. As an example, a simplified model of the treadle machine was made and the usefulness of the system was demonstrated.

In recent years, importance of the self-education is increasing for technical college students. Because, they must study a specialized field in the early stage and a short term. However, an effort to study by themselves is decreasing. In addition, the most of students aren't able to spend time on self-education for commuting time to school. In this research, we propose a material engineering e-learning system using smartphone that it aimed at the improvement of the self-education of the students. First of all, we explain an outline of the system. In this system, students make questions of the content after the lecture. Educators up-load the questions on the web and insert the questions into the native-application for smartphone, with the same data format. After that, the students are able to review with web browser running on familiar portable game devices, or/and with native application running on smartphone.

Recently, many game-softwares which are running on mobile-game-devices or PC are developed and sold. However, most of these softwares are for use as a liberal arts and a qualification examination. In this study, we purpose a interactive Learning-Assist-System for engineering running on mobile-game-devices. The system are able to use mobile-game-devices equipped with WEB browser, because this system is developed by HTML and JavaScript. In this system, students make questions. Department of Robotics Engineering in Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology has many researches in the author's laboratory, Developments, experiments and analyses of various children's toys. For example, boomerangs with three wings, PET Bottle Rockets, boomerang stunt planes, flying rings and boomerang dragonflies are developed and analyzed by simple equations of motion. The analytical results can explain the experiments. A boomerang paper cup is shape to connect two paper cups. Three connected rubber bands are wrapped around the circumference part at the center of the paper cup. The hand with the point of the rubber band is vertical and upward with ground. When it flies, it draws the elliptical orbit and comes back at hand. The loci of boomerang paper cup were analyzed by simple equations of motion and Runge-Kutta method analyzed results coincide very well with other experiments.sss

The author joins NHK Robot Contest of College of Technology, that is, "ROBOCON" every year. Last year, contest's rule was to have the robot performance. So the author decided to manufacture the robot flying the bamboomerang for children. The orbit is analyzed in our laboratory. The author made this launcher referring to planetary gear. Bamboomerang was able to fly from the launcher in the rally fascinated audience and NHK.

Author already reported the field work results of waterwheel that has scooping plates and chains that was preserved in the Wu Institute of Wuxi in Jiangsu province of China. The waterwheel was called Longguo che (dragon waterwheel). By using the measurement values of the parts, the standard of the ruler was clarified. The author reported a field survey result of the length of the ruler about 4600 years before, called "Nippur cubit" which was named by the excavation place. Including these reports, the results that examined the concrete numerical value of the ruler in the East and West world based on literature and field survey is reported in this paper.

Chuhachi Ninomiya had succeeded quite independently in flying a powered miniature aircraft 12 years in advance of the Wright brothers' success with "Wright Flyer". The miniature aircraft had wheels but the Wright brothers' airplane did not have them. Moreover, while the Wright brothers' airplane had two propeller blades, Ninomiya's aircraft had four propeller blades. Even though Ninomiya's aircraft was a miniature model, the originality and the flight results must be recognized as a big achievement. However, Ninomiya's name never appears in the aviation history of the world, and his name is hardly known in Japan compared with the Wright brothers. In this research, his development of the miniature aircraft, the possibility of a real airplane, and the evaluation of Ninomiya by future generations were examined.

The Y-shaped lumbers of chestnut trees from the Jomon period about 4000 years ago were excavated at the Sakuramachi site in Oyabe City, Toyama, Japan in 1997. The usage of Y-shaped lumbers at this site has not yet been clarified. A field survey of the Y-shaped lumbers of the Sakuramachi site was performed and structural characteristics of the Y-shaped lumbers were investigated. According to these characteristics, the hypothesis that they could have been used as sledges has been proposed. In 1988, giant chestnut trees were excavated at the Sakuramachi site in Oyabe City, Toyama, Japan. In 1994, giant chestnut trees were excavated at the Sannai-Maruyama site in Aomori City, Aomori, Japan. It is thought that the people from the Jomon period about 4000 years ago used the Y-shaped lumbers to transport heavy items such as giant trees. Giant trees excavated at both the Sakuramachi and Sannai-Maruyama sites are discussed in this paper.

Caustic image is one of bright line images created by concentrating light rays. We can see the typical image like a half of a nephroid created at the bottom of a cup by reflected light from the wall. The method of caustics is an engineering application to evaluate stress intensity factors of cracks and contact forces of contact problems. This report deals with a computer program and simulation for caustic images observed in our daily life for easy understanding the principle of caustic. The computer program developed can simulate caustic images for variable conditions, such as the position and type of light source, the size and shape of the cup of object. This computer program is possible to apply to engineering problems as well.

Intellectual property and ethics of science and technology are indispensable knowledge for researchers. We should tackle issues combining these two areas in order to conduct joint research with researchers from other domestic and foreign institutions. However, for example, the IBM spy case and the DNA espionage case have not been well analyzed. In addition, we can say that intellectual property is taught and researched independently from ethics of science and technology. I believe that clarifying the issues that combine these two areas will make it possible to shed light on the relationship that the parties concerned have regarding broad intellectual property rights. The current paper aims to analyze the rights relevant both to intellectual property and ethics of science and technology and propose an ideal way of education and research on intellectual property and ethics of science and technology

In manufacturing the product, the risk is generated with the function, the performance, and the cost at the design stage, too. Then, it is important to plan the risk forecasting when designing. However, measures do not often succeed. The design engineer should feel the responsibility of the influence on the society for the solution of this problem. This is the one that is called "Engineering ethics". The curriculum of the university and Technical College of 80% is the engineer ethics. However, work and the cost give priority if the student enters the enterprise. As a result, it will give priority to the responsibility from the responsibility to the society to the company. And, the engineer ethics are made a ruin, and the disaster cannot be prevented. This is a blind spot of safety. It thinks about the following as a method of settlement. The system that can practice the ethics action is made no consideration of the engineer of ethics. Authors propose ethics consideration engineering as the example.

Ill effect began to be more conspicuous than an advantage by the efficiency search at the present day though it was made in efficient・large quantities by the standardized article production and it was proceeding with the society which did large-scale consumption. But, the problem of the continuous development isn't solved by only cutting down activities. It believes that the product of the higher quality can become the society which gives both of the user, makers the high degree of satisfaction.

A new systematic safety education program, which education through experience and e-learning education system in a college of technology, is presented. The safety education project is composed of public lecture, experience and e-learning program in the entire college. Numerous new and unique teaching processes were developed to meet our objectives and were evaluated through anonymous student evaluations. We studied effect and issue of systematization on safety education program.

One of the goals of technology education in junior high school is to produce students with a more conceptual understanding of technology and its place in society, who can thus grasp and evaluate new bits of technology that they might never have seen before. Because "Object-making" by computer simulation technology has been rapidly developed, Computer aided engineering (CAE) technology for textile fiber reinforced plastics was used as teaching materials for technology education classes. To evaluate the effects of proposed instructional program as an aid to instruction and learning, we have analyzed the data of questionnaire which asked students how they feel about before and after implementation of this program.

A platform robot was developed and evaluated as part of the technical cooperation with the Kenyan robot contest. The specification was designed to comply with the contest rule and to activate the beginners of the robotics. The platform was manufactured so as to realize the line tracing of the white line and the obtainment of the blocks. A PIC (Peripheral Interface Controller) device was utilized as the controller, and the LED and the switches were mounted on the printed circuit board as the user interface. The control board had the sufficient scalability which enabled the implementation of the block obtainment function based on the original design by the students. The results of integration test showed that the block obtainment unit which contained the solenoid coils and the original sensors was equipped with the desired performance on the contest. The whole process of the development of the platform contributed to enhance the ability of Engineering Design for the students.

New types of practicing engineering education programs are being developed by The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in order to assist universities and colleges of technology to execute engineering education. The programs are a practical training subject and a factory tour program. This report describes the latter. After showing the background in which JSME began this activity, a trial program of the factory tour in which an existing factory tour program is utilized is described, and the executed results of the trial program are discussed. Finally, the real factory tour program, which is designed on the basis of the executed results and will be begun from the next year, is proposed.

Flight simulator is being used for the flight training at the schools of the airline company such as JAL or ANA Recently, in university educational course of training the pilots, flight simulator is adopted in order to train the skill of the airplane operation. There are few courses which use the flight simulator for the purpose of engineer training. Last year our university of Kanagawa Institute of Technology started the Aerospace Course in the department of the mechanical engineering. The aim of this course is to bring up engineers which can pilot airplanes. In this course, the flight simulator will be used not only for the pilot training but also for the purpose of supporting the understanding of the flight dynamics in some lectures. hi this study, to assist the learning of flight dynamics which is educated by means of flight simulator, an e-learning animation content was developed. In this paper, this animation content is presented.

Various social services are now required for the colleges. Technological education is supposed to be one of those services. The authors have taken an active part in the teaching services for primary school pupils. This paper indicates our experiences from those services. Although it is said that many pupils are not fond of science, this is not absolutely the truth. Many boys and girls love science. They are interested in many natural phenomena. They are eagerly studying how to make model planes, model cars and other items. We could learn a lot of things from the pupils who participated in our classes.

Up to now, a lot of function evaluation simulators of the hydraulic pressure system are announced. However, the energy evaluation simulator has not been announced. In a word, a dynamic model of a motor and pipe, etc. and the leakage and dynamic flow rate characteristic of servo valve are not considered in a past simulator. The energy simulator that contains dynamic efficiency (loss) of water hydraulic servo valve was developed. Moreover, the energy consumption corresponding to the water hydraulic pressure manipulator was calculated with this simulator. This paper shows effectiveness of the energy simulator and energy conservation of water hydraulic pressure system.

The many conventional machine systems were designed by maximum power. Therefore, evaluation of efficiency for the state of operating is not better. Then we proposed a method that pump pressure is changed by necessary pressure calculated from the load as load presumption method. This paper shows effectiveness of load presumption method with the simulation as one example. Also, this shows effectiveness of Load adaptive control with the experiment.
