We divided the hemiplegic patients after stroke, prescribed lower extremity orthoses in a convalescent rehabilitation ward (CRW), into two groups. One was the patients that moved to the CRW from an acute stage ward in the same hospital (Group A), while the other was the patients that moved to the CRW from other acute stage hospitals (Group B). We compared the periods taken from the onset of illness to the prescription of orthoses and the total length of hospitalization between Group A and Group B. Both of them were significantly shorter in Group A in comparison with those in Group B. It was thought that it was one of the factors to shorten the total length of hospitalization to prescribe orthoses at an early stage, and it was also suggested that the time of moving to the CRW and the period elapsed from moving to the CRW to the prescription of orthoses influenced length of the period from the onset of illness to the prescription of orthoses and the total length of hospitalization. It is desired that both acute stage hospitals and CRW share the recognition for the prescription of orthoses and the liaison-clinical pathway is effectively managed for the early prescription, the seamless rehabilitation and the early return to home.
