We used the doppler ultrasonography to assess diabetic nephropathy. We measured the blood flow velocity of the renal interlobar arteries and moreover examined the correlation with the creatinine clearance. The objects were 40 diabetic nephropathic patients and 40 normal volunteers. We measured the blood flow velocity of the renal interlobar arteries running along the renal pyramid by the pulsed doppler sonography. As the result, in diabetic nephropathy, all indices of Vmax, Vmin and Vmin/Vmax ratio were lower than normal volunteers, PI and RI were higher. Also, RI showed the best correlation with the creatinine clearance and we concluded that it will become the best index of diabetic nephropathy. In our conclusion, the flow velocity measurement of the renal interlobar arteries by the doppler ultrasonography was very useful to assess the diabetic nephropathy.
