With a view to assisting international students' comprehension and production of academic papers in various disciplines, this study analyzed the appearances of three moves recognized as being "typical of introduction" in a total of two hundred and seventy Japanese papers in representative academic journals in natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The three typically introductory moves, i.e., a) description of the research object and background, b) discussion of previous studies and c) statement of the purpose and outline of the study, were actually observed to appear in the pattern "a→b→c" across many different disciplines, while some features were specific to a field or to a certain journal. Also, another pattern was recognized where the move c) recurs in sections following the initial sections. Some proposals of the pedagogical nature were made based on the results.

This paper reports the outline, criteria and results of the final oral communication test of the preliminary Japanese language program for Indonesian "Kaigofukushi-shi" (care giver) candidates, who came to Japan under the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). The test consisted of Q&A to assess general Japanese oral communication ability and role play for specific Japanese. On preparing the evaluation chart, we considered the need to show levels of achievement, and to provide employers of the candidates with data for planning further Japanese language learning. We also clarified the evaluation chart for role play, so that Japanese language teachers with little knowledge of nursing care may evaluate the Role Play performance.

This study is an integral part of our efforts to build a "Spoken Japanese Corpus of Engineering" and to analyze utterances from seminars to provide Japanese language support for the research activities of international engineering students and researchers. This paper examines the use of wago-verb (Japanese origin verbs) in four fields of engineering. The results show 22 commonly used wago-verb that appear more than 20 times in all four fields, all of which are either former JLPT Level 3 or 4. Wago-verb used in seminars are mostly beginning level verbs, such as naru, miru, and kangaeru, although the utterances occur in a technical context. Nouns co-occurring with the commonly used wago-verb were categorized into former JLPT Level 2 or above, most of which consist of technical kanji words or loan words, in contrast to the verbs. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the co-occurrence patterns of the commonly used verbs and the nouns used in each field were mostly elementary level sentences.
