In teaching reading skill at junior high and high schools, the current teaching style has changed dramatically with the revision of Course of Study, changes of the times, and the development of ICT. The Grammar-Translation Method has long been the mainstream method of teaching, however, various other instructional methods have been introduced to deepen students' understanding more effectively. In addition to the Grammar-Translation method, reading instruction at my workplace has included task-based grammar instruction, the use of booklets, paragraph-charts and ICT, and the introduction of IB inquiry-based lessons. Looking back on these methods, we believe that it is important to make use of the advantages of each method, making up for the deficiencies with other methods. In addition, in order for students to understand English text more deeply rather than simply memorizing knowledge, it is necessary for them to learn proactively, and in order to have them do it, I feel the need for "classes created with students", which means classes that involve a lot of students in all aspects of the classes. I would like to explore ways students can learn something on their own in the classeroom and ways to stimulate students' intellectual curiosity that will lead to home study, and to foster "independent learners".
