There are many active and dormant volcanoes in central Kyushu, Japan. Many fumaroles and hot springs also exist in connection with the volcanoes and they are in a higher than 2 HFU heat flow zone. The shallow seismic activity in central Kyushu is generally high than that in other parts of Kyushu. Detailed studies of epicenter and hypocenter distributions in central Kyushu were made with special reference to its thermal state of the crust. Although the shallow seismic activity is generally high in central Kyushu as mentioned above, it is rather low in thermally active areas in a low tectonic stress level and most of hypocenters are shallower than 10 km. Such a seismic activity is affected by the crustal temperature. The temperature at the depth where the seismic activity decreases rapidly is about 500 to 600℃ which was calculated based on thermal data. Another feature is that earthquakes in geothermally active areas seem to occur primarily is swarm type sequences. The origin of such swarm type events is considered to be not the geothermal origin, for example, an increase of hot water supply, but an increase of tectonic stress, from the standpoint of time variation of seismic activity.

Ouantitative electron probe microanalysis of oxygen enables us to measure the amount of oxygen in minerals using the peak intensity method. This analytical procedure is useful that the oxygen can be routinely measured together with other elements. By the microanalysis of oxygen of titanomagnetite grains, degrees of oxidation can be examined in one grain. As a result of oxidation of titanomagnetite, decrease of iron and increase of oxygen and titanium have been observed. Oxidation of titanomagnetite proceeds parallel to an equi-Ti/O line rather than equi-Ti/Fe line.

Eight
14C ages of charcoal from pyroclastic flow and pyroclastic surge deposits of Tenjosan Volcano were measured. Six ages reported here and two published ages agree within statistical errors and their mean value is 1280±60 y. B.P. Two ages obtained for one sample, 1440±50 and 1530±190 y. B.P., are older than the other ages for the same flow unit. The older charcoal may be derived from the older deposits. A historical record shows that Tenjosan pyroclastics were erupted in 838 A.D. The discrepancy between radiocarbon and historical ages can be corrected by the calibration of dendroyear and by the correction for low
14C concentration in an oceanic air mass compared with that in a continental air mass.

The original structure of an eroded stratovolcano has been reconstructed from dike-swarm data measured in the field at Ocros, Peruvian Andes. Flow lineations of magma within dikes were estimated from measurements of elongation of vesicles and orientated alignments of phenocrysts. 45 percent of dikes at Ocros area have a lineation plunging steeply eastward. Strikes of the dikes show slight radial variation pointing east along the measured route. Such evidence suggests that the magma of these dikes was supplied from a common central conduit located estward and close to the measured route. Remaining dikes have lineations plunging shallower and either westward (32%) or eastward (23%), but their strikes are nearly parallel. Thus the magma for these remaining dikes was supplied from two separate conduits located east and west and relatively farther from the measured route. None of systematic differences in chemistry or modal composition were detected among the three groups of dikes and associated extrusives. This evidence suggests that the original structure was a composite stratovolcano having three nearby magmatic conduits. Maximum horizontal compressional stress axis (MHC) determined from the dike orientation is N80°E. This direction is similar to the result obtained from most focal mechanism solutions and flank-crater alignments of several late Quaternary volcanoes in the Central Andes area.
