The requirement of flame retardant technology is to develop the environmentaly safe flame retardant systems. It will be discussed the recent trend of flame retardant technology applying the nanotechnology, synergism effect and nonhalogen flame retardants.
It was recently found that the polycarbonate copolymerized with a small amount of polysiloxane shows good non-flammability. In this study, it was investigated on the thermal decomposition of polysiloxane co-polycarbonate in detail in order to clarify the behavior of polysiloxane segment in burning. As a consequence, it has turned out that polysiloxane-co-polycarbonate heated at around 400°C forms an airtight char, which contains the thermal decomposition products of polysiloxane on the surface, indicating that the char hindered the heat and gas transfers that are necessary for burning.
