  • What Passed Down from Uchimura to His Disciples

This paper considers the transmission of Christian thought as passed down from Mukyokai founder Uchimura Kanzo to his disciples. In particular, Uchimura's theology will be compared to that of his disciple Fujii Takeshi. Uchimura refused to introduce theologies of Western denominations, as he criticized Western denominations for their exclusiveness and self-centeredness. In contrast, Fujii and his generation adopted the liberal theology coming out of European theological schools (particularly Germany), favoring its critical objectivism as being in keeping with the times. Mukyokai's criticisms toward denominational theologies are aimed on their factionalism of the time, from the denomination-free standpoint. It seems that what was passed down from Uchimura to his disciples was not Uchimura's personal view/understanding of scripture/the Christian religion etc., but rather his modus operandi of rejecting institutionalized Christianity in favor of individual interpretation.

The relationship between the Japanese Anglican Church and its Korean counterpart started officially in 1984 with cooperation in mission work. The Japanese Anglican Church has acknowledged its past guilt and sought reconciliation in the hope of finding a new way to peace. However, in order to accomplish this goal more research on the history of the Anglican Church in these two countries is still required. Therefore, this paper will analyze how missionary work connected Korea and Japan through a study of “The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts” during the colonial period (1911-1945) focusing on the evangelical activities of Japanese Anglicans living in Korea.

This paper treats the two kinds of exegetical criteria, for selecting literal or figurative interpretation, found both in Augustine's De Genesi contra Manichaeos (c. 388-9) and De doctrina christiana (c. 396-7), and discusses the quality of biblical hermeneutics in the latter. First of all, a blasphemy-criterion in De Genesi contra Manichaeos is considered to be included in a more ample absurdity-criterion. Next as the consequence of analyzing Poland J. Teske's paper, although a criterion in De Genesi contra Manichaeos and criteria in De doctrina christiana do not conflict with each other, the latter criteria as ‘the love of God and neighbors' and ‘the understanding of God and neighbors’ are found to be conspicuous. Third, the particularity of the latter criteria is verified to be based on his idea that the Bible includes simple teachings for the double love and against human cupidity. Finally, the criteria of De doctrina christiana are regarded as the spiritual realities of an ecclesial community, and Augustine's aim of biblical interpretation in the community is thought of to provide the believers with the opportunity of love as the transaction of soul toward sapientia.

After starting the "reform and opening up" policy that began at the end of the 1970s, with the constant enhancement of the economy and the freedom of religion, Christianity grew tremendously in rural China. In light of fieldwork research, three reasons may be given for this rapid growth: because the vacuum spiritually among the peasants was fulfilled by Christianity; because the exchange of opinions was fostered in the meetings; and because of the intellectual assurance that life was absolutely secure in Christ. Thus the social needs among the rural people for personal security and mutual support were met by Christianity, and not by the national policies.
