  • AN ANALYSIS OF WISC DISCREPANCY

    Discrepancy between Verbal IQ and Performance IQ has been regarded as a symptom of abnormality in personality.
    The present writer tried to analyze WISC discrepancy with an assumption that it may have something to do with personality traits, not only of abnormal but also of normal children.
    Thirteen groups of subjects with special personality traits pattern who were resorted to our psycho-educational clinic and who were tested at various schools were compared with unselected group (N=603).
    While unselected group shows no dominance either in Verbal or in Performance, thirteen groups show different types of discrepancy distribution.
    From the fact that different pattern of personality traits shows peculiar type of discrepancy, we can conclude intelligence structure has relationship with personality traits.

    The purpose of the present study is to measure the field-force of visually perceived figures through a new phenomenon that has never been used.
    With the brief presentation of a small light point (test-point) around a figure, the test-point appears to move swiftly away from the figure and back to it.
    To measure the amount of this apparent movement, the scale-point was presented on the opposite side to the figure, and its luminous intensity to counteract the movement was measured. Results indicate that, (1) the amount of movement decreases with the distance from the figure to the test-point, (2) it increases according as the luminous intensity of the figure increases, and (3) these results are noticed commonly both in solid and contour figures. These tendencies are exceedingly akin to those obtained by the light-threshold method. The method used seems as one of the most promising in constructing the field of figures, since the movement includes both the direction and the amount as its phenomenal properties.

    The apparent size and depth of the objects in stereograms were measured by the method of transposition. In both apparent size and depth the stereograms with the concrete background were estimated more precisely than those without it and the stereograms with the larger binocular disparity were also estimated more precisely than those with the small disparity. In each stereogram size constancy was obtained. If an antogonistic relationship between the disparity and the background was set, the background was dominant as a cue over the disparity. The positive correlation between the estimation of the apparent size and that of the apparent depth, and the consistent individual tendency in the estimation were found.

    A new objective procedure for the orthogonal rotation is proposed. First, one of the difficulties inherent in the normal varimax method-we obtain many negative large factor loadings in a certain kind of initial factor matrices-is pointed out. Second, the principles of our method by the notion of geometric vector are described. Third, three results by our method are shown together with the values which are determined by the subjective and the normal varimax methods, and our solution is shown to be more appropriate than the normal varimax solution as long as subjective result is taken as the criterion.

    A classification is given between size constancy in two stimuli comparison situation and size constancy in single stimuli situation. Both types of size constancy are compared experimentally. Results are: (a) Constancy of perceived size in single stimuli situation is higher than that of perceived size in two stimuli comparison situation. (b) In two stimuli comparison situation, the effect of change in observational conditions is predominant, whereas in single stimuli situation it is not so. (c) Constancy of familiar object is higher than that of unfamiliar object.

    This study was a further attempt to mediate the divergent evidences presented about the theme in terms of some experimental variables. 3×2 two-factorial design was used in conditioning with variations in CS-US sequence and levels of training. The rats trained thus differently were tested in the identical situation similar to Mowrer and Aiken's (1954) experiment. The distinctive features in test procedure were: (a) making the situation relatively “dangerous” (b) using partial reinforcement.
    The covariance analysis of the test scores indicated that the remarkable variance relating to the factor of CS-US sequence could be referred solely to the difference between Forward and the others, and the differential effects of conditioning level upon Control and Backward seem to be not conclusive.

    One of the difficulties inherent in the normal varimax method of the orthogonal rotation of factors, i. e., the systematic bias caused by maximization of the sum of the variances of squared normalized factor loadings by columns, is pointed out. Then, it is shown that the method we have proposed in the preceding article (1963) provides a satisfactory solution of this difficulty by showing that the result of our solution, when applied on Thurstone's PMA battery, agrees well with his subjective solution.
