Thirty-five species of penaeoid prawns, representing 9 genera in 3 families, have been found over a period of 5 years from 1976 to 1980 in the Philippine waters. Of these, 15 species have been recorded for the first time from the country. Keys for the identification of genera and species, and descriptions as well as illustrations of 35 species except for the illustration of Metapenaeus moyebi are provided. Twelve species out of the 35 species are commercially important. They are Metapenaeus anchistus, M. dalli as well as M. moyebi, M. ensis. Penaeus indicus, P. japonicus, P. latisulcatus, P. merguiensis, P. monodon, P. semisulcatus, Solenocera alticarinata, and S. melantho, of which P. monodon is the greatest because of its large size, abundant occurrence of the fry and easier cultivation in the pond, and furthemore, other five Penaeus species are of great potential for an aquaculture in brackishwater fishponds.

Larval development of Chilean Cancer species comprises one prezoeal stage, five zoeal and one megalopal stages. The prezoeae observed in this study emerge from the eggs as a free and active swimming larvae, lasting about 15 minutes before molting to the typical first zoea. Embryonic cuticle rounds completely the larva, forming long, setose, soft sheaths on antennules, antenna and telson ; all the parabuccal appendages are rudimentaries and unfunctional. A key for to identify the studied species is presented and furthermore, some comments concerning other previously reported prezoeae are also presented. Prezoea larvae are described and illustrated in detail.

The complete larval development of Leucosia obtusifrons DE HAAN, and the first zoeal stage of Arcania heptacantha (DE HAAN) and A. undecimspinosa HE HAAN are described and illustrated herein, compairing with those of the five species, A. undecimspinosa elongata Yokoya, Myra fugax (Fabricius), Philyra syndactyla Ortmann, P. pisum DE HAAN and L. anatum (Herbst). The larva of L. obtusifrons has three zoeal stages and one megalopa stage. In Myra and Arcania, five zoeal and one megalopa stages can be found. The larvae of philyrinid and leucosiinid crabs are classified into two groups by the following characters : 1) Group A : The maxilla II of the zoeae has 2・2 endopodal setation and the basal and coxal endites are bilobed. Megalopa bears the uropod in Myra and Arania. 2) Group B : The maxilla II of the zoeae has 2・1 endopodal setation, the basal and coxal endites are unilobed. Megalopa bears no uropod in Philyra and Leucosia.
