Chitosan is contained in the hull of crabs and lobsters, which is abandaned in great quantities as an industrial waste. If the novel ion-exchanger based on chitosan is produced at a low cost and it is effective for ion exchange with metal ions, we can find various uses for separation of metai ions. In the present study, ion exchange characteristics of the chitosan based ion-exchanger was investigated for the purpose of elucidation of ion exchange mechanism.
The ion exchange of metal ions with the chitosan based ion-exchanger is very fast due to the surface hydrophilic property. It takes 8 min to obtain 80% uptake of metal ions, such as Cu, Ni and Co. The ion-exchanger is possible to use only for ion exchange of cations. Separation of Co and Ni or Cu and other metal ions is effective in the use of the ion-exchanger. Gallium is exchanged at weak alkaline pH, namely pH 6.8-8. In the uptake of metal ions from ammonium salt solution, the amount exchanged is suppressed due to the formation of ammine-matal complexes.
