At the consolidation stage of triaxial tests, the author has recognized that the horizontal coefficient of consolidation c
h is readily obtained by using a proper paper drain and by measuring end pore pressure or volume change of the sample. In this paper, the above statiment is theoretically examined and a method to determine the value of c
h from the test data is proposed. Furthermore, the methods of paper drain are experimentally investigated and some test results are shown.
