"Travel" assumes various significant aspects in Anne Tyler's works. She thinks that we have been traveling all our lives; life is itself the journey. The characters in her tenth novel, The Accidental Tourist (1985) struggle in their lives in quest of their true selves, and Tyler uses their travels to express this struggle. This paper deals with the meaning of "travel" and the message the author wants to convey to us in this work.

Theodore Dreiser produced two collections of short fiction, Free and Other Stories (1918) and Chains (1927). Dreiser, as a short-story writer, usually has been found wanting, but critics have paid some attention to his short stories because they contain many of the attributes of his novels. In this paper, we will consider Dreiser's view of life as seen in his short fiction, referring to some stories in two collections as well as some of his later stories such as "Fine Furniture".

As has been argued in previous research, in first-year education of Japanese universities, Japanese Language Education for Japanese (JLEforJ) has played a crucial role. In this field, persuasive research has not been carried out on how JLEforJ should be organized and how it should be taught. Based on the findings coming from the practice of JLEforJ, this paper argues that both collaboration between JLEforJ and relevant courses and cooperative learning are needed to develop advanced communicative ability of Japanese.

The acceptable expressions can be effectively produced by applying an individual word to the rule of the syntax/semantics theory following the collocational restrictions. However, the learning that is conscious is necessary for the learners who do not assume a purpose language mother tongue, because they do not possess psychological validity for the collocational restrictions. This report set the collocation category in Korean education for Japanese speakers and tried a classification/analysis for some Korean collocations.

In this paper asymmetry in mood in terms of illocutionary force will be investigated. More specifically, It will be argued that English imperatives can be embedded under so-called "Represented Speech", where two distinct illocutionary forces are integrated into one single speech act by a theoretical apparatus, i.e., “speech act compounding”. As a result of the analysis, hitherto unnoted facts concerning the embeddability of root sentences will be provided.
