JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA method how to accurately determine the drift of gravimeter is one of important but difficult problems in the analysis of gravimetric data, especially for data obtained by international gravimetric connections which were carried out taking a long duration of time. The drift of LaCoste & Romberg gravimeters (model G) was thoroughly examined, using the data obtained by the international gravimetric connections which were carried out at selected cities mainly along the Circum-Pacific zone from 1979 to 1982. It was clearly recognized for some gravimeters that positive and negative drifts of the gravimeter occurred when the gravimeter was brought from cities with large and small gravity values, respectively. Generally speaking, however, cities with large gravity values are cooler, while those with small values are warmer. Such a pronounced tendency on the drift of the gravimeter may explain by an elastic property of the springs mounted inside of the gravimeter. It is difficult to conclude, at present, which affects the drift of the gravimeter more, ambient temperature or gravity value of measuring stations. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn precise gravity surveys of mountainous areas, a sudden and large change in reading values of LaCoste & Romberg gravimeters has frequently been experienced immediately after climbing down from a high altitude. In the course of international gravimetric connections, gravity measurements in mountainous areas were performed by means of several LaCoste & Romberg gravimeters (model G) along a route from Valparaiso on the Pacific coast to Caracoles on the border of Chile-Argentina in Chile. This route was satisfactory for examining the effects of the rapid change of atmospheric pressure on the gravimeter readings. Because both the measuring stations are located at a height difference amounting to more than 3, 000m, and it was of great advantage to the examination that it took only a single day by car to travel to and from both the measuring stations. It was ascertained that relative deviations in reading values for three gravimeters employed were well correlated with the difference of station altitudes. As gravity measurements for the international gravimetric connections were executed just before and immediately after air transportation at measuring stations in airports, the international gravimetric connections provided an opportunity to examine such an effect of air transportation. However, a large deviation of gravity values measured on the route between Valparaiso and Caracoles was not found on any of the other routes of air transportation.View full abstractDownload PDF (759K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSIn order to know precise geomagnetic anomalies in total force at Sagami Bay wherethe large Kanto Earthquake occurred in 1923, magnetic survey was carried out by useof towing proton-precession magnetometers.The effect of magnetization of the ship was removed by use of a pair of magnetometerstowed 50 m and 200 m apart from stern of the ship. Ship's position wasdetermined by use of Loran C within an accuracy of 50 m. Magnetic daily variationwas removed by use of data given from the ocean bottom magnetometer deployed atthe same region.By repeating the observation, it would be possible to detect variation of local geomagneticanomalies due to earthquakes or volcanic activity.View full abstractDownload PDF (669K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSEach time a large earthquake occurs in Japan, a detailed survey of seismic intensity is made by a questionnaire on inhabitants in the seismic area. In a rough estimate, seismic intensity increases with magnitude and decreases with hypocentric distance. The standard seismic intensity (JMA scale) is empirically determined by Kawasumi's formula as a function of magnitude and hypocentric distance. The seismic intensity anomaly is defined by the deviation of an actually observed intensity from the standard one. On the basis of the results of the survey made immediately after the 1982 Urakawa-Oki earthquake of M7.1, it becomes clear that the distribution of seismic intensity anomaly agrees well with that of long-wavelength Bouguer anomaly.View full abstractDownload PDF (254K) -

For some regional mathematical treatment of such geophysical data, the expansion into spherical harmonics series whose pole is located at an arbitrary point is sometimes very convenient.
