    Oxidations of ethylmercaptane, diethyl sulphide, methylamine and trimethylamine with air were studied in a tubular- reactor at 300°C-500°C
    The oxidation rates of the osmogenes were in the following order: ethylmercaptane>diethyl sulphide>trimethylamine>methylamine. This order might be expected in comparion of the minimum ignition temperature of hydrogen sulphide with one of ammonia.
    The over-all order of the reactions and the activation energies of the reactions were datermined from the experimental data. The order of the reaction (n) and the activation energy (ΔE) were as follows: n=1.5 and ΔE=15 Kcal/mol for ethylmercaptane, n=2.6 and ΔE=24Kcal/mol for diethyl sulphide, n=2.4 and ΔE=33 Kcal/mol for methylamine, n=1.8 and ΔE=20 Kcal/mol for trimethylamine.
    Since the over-all orders of the reactions were not integer, the oxidation reactions of the osmogenes should be complex ones. The over-all orders of the reactions did not change within the limits of this experiments.

    Effects of sulfer oxides on cylindrical filter paper applied in measuring dust concentration in stack gas were experimentally analyzed. Filter papers offered to the experiment were borosilicate glass fibrous filter (Toyo Roshi No.86 and No.86R) and silica glass fibrous filter (Toyo Roshi No.88 R), where “R” signifies acid treatment.
    Considering flue gas in the factories, the test conditions were selected as follows; SO2 gas concentrations balanced by N2 gas were 1000 and 2000ppm, reaction temperatures were 100, 200, 300, 400°C and room temperature, gas flow rates were 0.35 and 0.07 l/min. Thermobalance analyzer, Shimazu DTG-2B Type was utilized for estimating the adsorbed SO2 on fibrous filter paper.
    Experimental results showed that the adsorption of SO2 gas on borosilicate glass fibrous filter, especially NO.86 (untreated by acid) was promoted with the increase of gas temperature and gas supplying time, and with the decrease of gas flow rate. This increase in adsorption is not negligible as compared with the mass of sampled dust. It was also found that the adsorbed SO2 is irreversible. On the other hand, the adsorbed SO2 on silica glass fibrous filter was little increased.

    A study of the phytotoxicity of ozone to plants was conducted in controlled-atomosphere greenhouses to detemine if the symptoms of such exposure would be similiar to symptoms exhibited by plants exposed to photochemical smog (which contains ozone) in the Tokyo area. Test plants used were herbaceous plants and woody plants, which were fumigated to 20 pphm ozone. Plants used as controlls for the ozone exposure experiments were placed in a carbon filtered geenhouse. Herbaceous plants were generally sensitive to injury, especially Brassica rapa, Brassica pekinensis and others were extremely responsive species. In comparison with herbaceous plants, woody plants were rather resistant except for poplar. Depending on plant species and severity of injury, ozone-injury symptoms of herbaceous plants were bleaching, chlorosis, necrosis, and reddish-brown flecks. leaves of woody plants developed discrete, punctate spots, reddish-brown pigment on the upper surfaces and lastly defoliation. Ozone injury was typically confined to the upper leaf surfaces and notably greater mature leaves. Microscopic examination showed that pallisade cells were much more prone to ozone injury than other tissues.

    Experiments in which plants were exposed to ozone, produced the symptoms of bleaching, chlorosis, and red-brown flecks in the leaves of the plants. The appearance of a red-brown or red-purple pigment in the leaves of Zelkova and Morning glory was identified as the anthocyanin pigment. Quantitative analysis of the chlorophyll was carried out in this laboratory. It was found that the total chlorophyll content and chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratio had decreased due to the ozone exposure. The authors deduced that ozone accelerates senesence of plants in the light of decrease of chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratio and reports of electromicroscopic observations.

    We investigated the incidnce of dieseases in Yokkaichi area through the records of National Health Insurance System from April 1961 to March 1970. There was remarkable difference between polluted and non-polluted districts in the incidences of upper respiratory diseases, common cold and bronchitis, bronchial asthma and asthmatic bronchitis, and a group of diseases in the front parts of eye. The incidence of bronchial asthma had significant correlation to sulphur dioxide level in the districts in 1964, but it had no significant correlation in 1970. The incidences of chronic bronchitis and emphysema were significantly correlated with the concentration of sulphur dioxide in the districts in 1970.
