To investigate the influences of preventing fruiting on corn stalk, normal pollination and prevention of pollination by placing waxed paper bags over ear shoots were applied to a hybrid. Brix readings in stalk juice and accumulation of dry matter in stalks of unpollinated plants significantly exceeded those of pollinated plants. On the other hand, the volumes of each internode were nearly equal in the plants of two treatments. The dry matter weight per volume of each internode can be a useful indicator available for estimation of source-sink balance during the grain filling period.

An experiment in which seven partial defoliation treatments were used after silking showed that the dry matter produced per m^2 of leaf area from silking to maturity by the top five, middle three, and bottom six leaves was of the ratio 100 : 65 : 16 and that the estimated contributions of the three groups to dry matter production were about 46, 39, and 15%, respectively.

The optimum temperature for regrowth after longer rest period was rather high (day-night temp., 25-20°C or 30-25°C), but it became lower as the rest period was shortened ; 17-12°C when cut at weekly intervals. This may be related to a greater distribution of dry matter, nitrogen and TAC into the stubble and roots, to a higher nitrogen concentration and greater specific leaf weight in the regrown leaves, and to lower respiration loss under lower temperatures than under higher temperatures.
