We show that the non-trivial correlation of two properly chosen column sequences of length q-1 from the array structure of two Sidelnikov sequences of periods qe-1 and qd-1, respectively, is upper-bounded by $(2d-1)\sqrt{q} + 1$, if $2\leq e < d < \frac{1}{2}(\sqrt{q}-\frac{2}{\sqrt{q}}+1)$. Based on this, we propose a construction by combining properly chosen columns from arrays of size $(q-1) \times \frac{q^e-1}{q-1}$ with e=2,3,...,d. The combining process enlarge the family size while maintaining the upper-bound of maximum non-trivial correlation. We also propose an algorithm for generating the sequence family based on Chinese remainder theorem. The proposed algorithm is more efficient than brute force approach.

In racetrack memories (RM), a position error (insertion or deletion error) results from unstable data reading. For position errors in RM with multiple read-heads (RHs), we propose a protograph-based LDPC coded system specified by a protograph and a protograph-aware permutation. The protograph-aware permutation facilitates the design and analysis of the coded system. By solving a multi-objective optimization problem, the coded system attains the properties of fast convergence decoding, a good decoding threshold, and a linear minimum distance growth. In addition, the coded system can adapt to varying numbers of RHs without any modification. The asymptotic decoding thresholds with a limited number of iterations verify the good properties of the system. Furthermore, for varying numbers of RHs, the simulation results with both small and large number of iterations, exhibit excellent decoding performances, both with short and long block lengths, and without error floors.

Access control and surveillance applications like walking-through security gates and immigration control points have a great demand for convenient and accurate biometric recognition in unconstrained scenarios with low user cooperation. The periocular region, which is a relatively new biometric trait, has been attracting much attention for recognition of an individual in such scenarios. This paper proposes a periocular recognition method that combines Phase-Based Correspondence Matching (PB-CM) with a texture enhancement technique. PB-CM has demonstrated high recognition performance in other biometric traits, e.g., face, palmprint and finger-knuckle-print. However, a major limitation for periocular region is that the performance of PB-CM degrades when the periocular skin has poor texture. We address this problem by applying texture enhancement and found out that variance normalization of texture significantly improves the performance of periocular recognition using PB-CM. Experimental evaluation using three public databases demonstrates the advantage of the proposed method compared with conventional methods.

One of the major causes of mortalities around the globe is lung cancer with the least chance of survival even after the diagnosis. Computer-aided detection can play an important role, especially in initial screening and thus prevent the deaths caused by lung cancer. In this paper, a novel technique for lung nodule detection, which is the primary cause of lung cancer, is proposed using convolutional neural networks. Initially, the lung volume is segmented from a CT image using optimal thresholding which is followed by image enhancement using multi-scale dot enhancement filtering. Next, lung nodule candidates are detected from an enhanced image and certain features are extracted. The extracted features belong to intensity, shape and texture class. Finally, the classification of lung nodule candidates into nodules and non-nodules is done using a convolutional neural network. The Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC) dataset has been used to evaluate the proposed system which achieved an accuracy of 94.80% with 6.2 false positives per scan only.

This paper presents a hybrid architecture for a neural network (NN) trained by a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The NN is implemented on the hardware side while the PSO is executed by a processor on the software side. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) is also applied to reduce correlated information. The PCA module is implemented in hardware by the SystemVerilog programming language to increase operating speed. Experimental results showed that the proposed architecture had been successfully implemented. In addition, the hardware-based NN trained by PSO (NN-PSO) program was faster than the software-based NN trained by the PSO program. The proposed NN-PSO with PCA also obtained better recognition rates than the NN-PSO without-PCA.

Phase interferometer using baseline composed by uniform linear array (ULA) with stable phase center for estimating the angle of arrival (AOA) is always employed in the direction finding (DF) system. However, the phase center of antenna element could vary with the incident angle, frequency, multipath and so on. To deal with these problems, a novel method is proposed in this paper to calibrate the phase center over ultra-wideband (UWB). Meanwhile, the restrictions of this method are discussed. Numerical simulations reveal that higher accuracy and larger unambiguous angle range can be obtained by the proposed method.

In this letter, a polarization filtering based transmission (PFBT) scheme is proposed to enhance the spectrum efficiency in wireless communications. In such scheme, the information is divided into several parts and each is conveyed by a polarized signal with a unique polarization state (PS). Then, the polarized signals are added up and transmitted by the dual-polarized antenna. At the receiver side, the oblique projection polarization filters (OPPFs) are adopted to separate each polarized signal. Thus, they can be demodulated separately. We mainly focus on the construction methods of the OPPF matrix when the number of the separate parts is 2 and 3 and evaluate the performance in terms of the capacity and the bit error rate. In addition, we also discuss the probability of the signal separation when the number of the separate parts is equal or greater than 4. Theoretical results and simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

We numerically investigate that optimal robust onion-like networks can emerge even with the constraint of surface growth in supposing a spatially embedded transportation or communication system. To be onion-like, moderately long links are necessary in the attachment through intermediations inspired from a social organization theory.

Boolean functions and vectorial Boolean functions are the most important components of stream ciphers. Their cryptographic properties are crucial to the security of the underlying ciphers. And how to construct such functions with good cryptographic properties is a nice problem that worth to be investigated. In this paper, using two small nonlinear functions with t-1 resiliency, we provide a method on constructing t-resilient n variables Boolean functions with strictly almost optimal nonlinearity >2n-1-2n/2 and optimal algebraic degree n-t-1. Based on the method, we give another construction so that a large class of resilient vectorial Boolean functions can be obtained. It is shown that the vectorial Boolean functions also have strictly almost optimal nonlinearity and optimal algebraic degree.

As a generalization of perfect nonlinear (PN) functions, zero-difference balanced (ZDB) functions play an important role in coding theory, cryptography and communications engineering. Inspired by a foregoing work of Liu et al. [1], we present a class of ZDB functions with new parameters based on the cyclotomy in finite fields. Employing these ZDB functions, we obtain simultaneously optimal constant composition codes and perfect difference systems of sets.

Using linear programming (LP) decoding based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes shows lower complexity than the original LP decoding. However, the development of the ADMM-LP decoding algorithm could still be limited by the computational complexity of Euclidean projections onto parity check polytope. In this paper, we proposed a bisection method iterative algorithm (BMIA) for projection onto parity check polytope avoiding sorting operation and the complexity is linear. In addition, the convergence of the proposed algorithm is more than three times as fast as the existing algorithm, which can even be 10 times in the case of high input dimension.

In this paper, we consider a wide family of λ-quasi-twisted (λ-QT) codes of index 2 and provide a bound on the minimum Hamming distance. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for dual containing with respect to Hermitian inner product of these involved codes. As an application, some good stabilizer quantum codes over small finite fields 𝔽2 or 𝔽3 are obtained from the class of λ-QT codes.

Optical orthogonal signature pattern codes (OOSPCs) have attracted great attention due to their important application in the spatial code-division multiple-access network for image transmission. In this paper, we give a construction for OOSPCs based on cyclic codes over 𝔽p. Applying this construction with the Reed-Solomon codes and the generalized Berlekamp-Justesen codes, we obtain two classes of asymptotically optimal OOSPCs.

In this letter, we investigate the separating redundancy of binary linear codes. Using analytical techniques, we provide a general lower bound on the first separating redundancy of binary linear codes and show the bound is tight for a particular family of binary linear codes, i.e., cycle codes. In other words, the first separating redundancy of cycle codes can be determined. We also derive a deterministic and constructive upper bound on the second separating redundancy of cycle codes, which is shown to be better than the general deterministic and constructive upper bounds for the codes.

Constrained by quality-of-service (QoS), a robust transceiver design is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels with imperfect channel state information (CSI) under bounded error model. The QoS measurement is represented as the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for each user with single data stream. The problem is formulated as sum power minimization to reduce the total power consumption for energy efficiency. In a centralized manner, alternating optimization is performed at each node. For fixed transmitters, closed-form expression for the receive beamforming vectors is deduced. And for fixed receivers, the sum-power minimization problem is recast as a semi-definite program form with linear matrix inequalities constraints. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence and robustness of the proposed algorithm, which is important for practical applications in future wireless networks.

This letter presents a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique for a two-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that exploits the alignments of inter-cell interference channels and signal channels within a cluster in a cell. The proposed technique finds combiner vectors for users that align the inter-cell interference channels and the signal channels simultaneously. This technique utilizes the aligned interference and signal channels to obtain precoder matrices for base stations through which each data stream modulated by NOMA can be transmitted to the intended cluster without interference. In addition, we derive the sufficient condition for transmit and receive antenna configurations in the MIMO NOMA systems to eliminate inter-cell interference and inter-cluster interference simultaneously. Because the proposed technique effectively suppresses the inter-cell interference, it achieves a higher degree of freedom than the existing techniques relying on an avoidance of inter-cell interference, thereby obtaining a better sum rate performance in high SNR regions. Furthermore, we present the hybrid MIMO NOMA technique, which combines the MIMO NOMA technique exploiting channel alignment with the existing techniques boosting the received signal powers. Using the benefits from these techniques, the proposed hybrid technique achieves a good performance within all SNR regions. The simulation results successfully demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques on the sum rate performance.

An adaptive bit allocation scheme for zero-forcing (ZF) Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) is proposed. The ZF-THP enables us to achieve feasible bit error rate (BER) performance when appropriate substream permutations are installed at the transmitter. In this study, the number of bits in each substream is adaptively allocated to minimize the average BER in fading environments. Numerical examples are provided to compare the proposed method with eigenbeam space division multiplexing (E-SDM) method.

This letter proposes a novel dynamic channel assignment (DCA) scheme to improve the downlink system capacity in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) with fractional frequency reuse (FFR). In the proposed DCA scheme, the macro base station (MBS) finds small-cell base stations (SBSs) that give strong interference to macro user equipments (MUEs) and then dynamically assigns subchannels to the SBSs to serve their small-cell user equipments (SUEs) according to the cross-tier interference information to MUEs. Through simulation results, it is shown that the proposed DCA scheme outperforms other schemes in terms of the total system capacity.
