Seventeen taxa of pteropods are described from the middle Miocene to early Pliocene Sagara Group and the early Pliocene lowermost part of the Kakegawa Group of Sagara-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture and its environs. About half of them are reported for the first time from Japan. The pteropod faunas of these two stratigraphic units are characterized by the abundance of Cuvierina cf. tubulata. A comparison between the pteropod fauna of the lowermost part of the Kakegawa Group and that of the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene remaining part of the group suggests the occurrence of a remarkable change in the pteropod fauna of the Kakegawa district in a late Pliocene age. Five taxa, Clio sp., Cavolinia cf. angusticostata, C. cf. floridana, C. cf. gypsorum and C. cf. vendryesiana seem to serve as a good index of the Pliocene.
