This paper proposes a possible architecture of conceptualization processes constituting thinking for interpreting, paying due attention to the distinction between langue and parole on the one hand and between speaking/hearing in general and the act of interpreting on the other. While static knowledge of language should be included in the capacity of an interpreter, his/her online conceptualization of dynamic linguistic expressions in source and target utterances is at stake during the act of interpreting particularly in the simultaneous mode. Some authentic samples of simultaneous interpreting are cited to support the proposed version of the conceptualizer for interpreters, which contains at least such planning processes as segmentation, selection, structuring and linearization. Research on thinking for interpreting is to be promoted to an academic area dedicated to interpreting studies.

By examining superficial differences between SL and TL, we can explore cognitive processing of simultaneous interpreting. In some cases, apparently noncorresponding expressions in TL preserve the message the original speaker intends to convey. Thus, superficial linguistic differences are not always just accidental errors or failed attempts of an interpreter, but show essential cognitive processes of utterance comprehension and enable stable and efficient performance of interpreting. In this paper, we will examine characteristic examples taken from a record of genuine simultaneous interpreting and analyse them in terms of vocabulary, word selection, textual cohesion and syntactic structures in SL/TL in order to probe mental processes bridging SL and TL. We will examine conditions of “deverbalisation” and “conceptualisation” in context and show how they work in simultaneous interpreting and general discourse processing.

Differences between a source text (ST) and a target text (TT) can be a window to observe simultaneous interpreter’s online discourse processing. This study focuses on construction of a causal event structure by an interpreter. Despite of no causal expression in the ST, an interpreter sometimes explicitly expresses causation in the TT. In this study, taking a Japanese (target language) morpheme “sase” as a clue, which explicitly marks a causal relation between participants in a ser ial event, an event structure constructed as the interpreter’s mental representation is explored. The event structure of a causal event can be analysed in terms of force dynamics (Talmy 2000) and causal chain (Croft 1990, 1991). As sources of the event structure, apart from the corresponding ST expression, information from other part of the S T and other cognitive resources such as encyclopaedic knowledge is specified in examples from actual performance.
