The purpose of this paper is to trace the transition of motive power type used in the factory. Firstly, I selected factories from two volumes of Kojo Tsuran (ed. Noshomusho) published in 1904 and 1909, in 1909 and 1920. Secondly, whether motive power was introduced in each non-powered factory or not, and whether the type of motive power used in the factory during changed or not during the period in question, were examined. As a result of total, for 1904-1909, the greater part of non-powered factories were still non-powered. More than half of powered factories continued to use the same type of motive power. For 1909-1920, motive power was introduced into a half of the non-powered factories. The proportion of powered factories which continued to use the same type of motive power declined. The factories which introduced electric motor driven by purchased electric power increased remarkably. In these two periods, the number of factories which used more than two types of motive power together increased.
