我々は、形状記憶合金に強磁性という性質を加えた強磁性形状記憶合金の開発を行っている。これまでの形状記憶合金は、磁性をもたないものであったが強磁性という性質を加えることにより、磁気センサや誘導加熱により駆動するアクチュエータへの応用が期待できる。また、それらを利用する際、主にワイヤーをバネ状に加工して用いられる。ワイヤーに加工することにより、どの方向にも曲げることができ、加工の自由度が高くなる。本研究では、回転液中紡糸法を用い、強磁性形状記憶合金をワイヤーに加工し、強磁性形状記憶ワイヤーとして磁気特性や形状記憶特性の評価を行う。

Difference in fatigue strength depending on rotational speed between in air and in water at the rotating-bending fatigue characteristics of a TiNi Shape-memory alloy wire was found in our previous work. The heat transfer characteristics around a shape-memory alloy wire was measured using Reynold's analogy. The temperature rise of metal during the rotating-bending cycles were calculated considering heat transfer result. As a result, the rotating-bending fatigue characteristics of a shape-memory alloy wire were well explained from the viewpoint of heat transfer characteristics.

A tilt-disk offset crank heat engine using shape memory alloy was developed and output power characteristics of the engine were investigated. The output power characteristics were discussed based on the thermomecanical properties of shape memory alloy. The results are summarized as follows. (1) The output power characteristics are prescribed based on the properties of recovery stress which appears in shape memory alloy. (2) The equation describing the influence of center distance of two disks, inclined angle, heating temperature and velocity of air flow on output power was proposed based on the properties of the recovery stress. The output power characteristics are expressed quantitatively by the proposed equation. (3) The relationship on output power is useful for development and design of a shape-memory alloy heat engine.

Interpreting at depositions and other proceedings in civil litigation represents a significant segment of the Japanese interpreting market in the United States. There is also a solid need for interpreters at depositions taken in Japan. However, there seems to be no formal training course designed for this specialized field of interpreting. This paper describes the deposition interpreting class which has been offered experimentally as part of the advanced consecutive interpretation courses in the Japanese Program of the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (GSTI/MIIS). The main objectives of this three-session class are to acquire general knowledge of legal procedures, terminology and professional protocol, and to study basic interpreting strategies for depositions. In light of the demand in the markets, and based on feedback from students and graduates, not only should these sessions be continued, but considerations should also be given to their further development to cover a wider scope of legal interpreting in the future.

It is necessary to develop the new power generation system using the unused low temperature thermal energy around 100 degrees C from a viewpoint of global warming prevention. Even if a shape memory alloy is bent in normal temperature, when it is warmed, it has the character which returns to the original straight form. Using this character of a shape memory alloy, unused thermal energy will be able to transform into rotation energy, and finally it can change into electric energy. We solved this energy conversion mechanism and the validity of this theory was indirectly verified by experiment. Furthermore, the power generation characteristic of the Shape Memory Alloy Engine was obtained by experiment.
