This paper reports on teaching content and activities for second-year students aimed at
enhancing their reading comprehension skills. Recently, the importance of cultivating communicative English abilities has been increasingly emphasized, but among four skills- reading, writing, speaking, and listening-reading skills should be acquired as basics for English learning. In order for the students to gain basic reading skills, the focus was put on three approaches: vocabulary building, rapid reading, and close reading. The success of these approaches was evaluated by examining TOEIC Bridge IP scores and the results of student questionnaires. The average scores of TOEIC Bridge IP improved, compared to those of the previous year. The results of the questionnaires indicate that their attitudes towards the approaches are positive, and that they see them as helpful in enhancing their reading comprehension skills.
