    The Yanagase fault can be traced 55 kilometers as the northeastern limit of the Biwa Lake basin.
    1) There are fault-line valleys that follow the line of the fault. It has been inferred that the fault is of recent origin on the basis of geomorphological and geological features.
    2) The earthquake of Anegawa in 1909 has been suggested to be related to the fault. Releveling of bench marks across the southern extension of the fault indicated uplift on the northeast side of it (fig. 3; after A. Imamura, 1928).
    3) The fault may be a left lateral strike slip one on the basis of some evidences (figs. 4 and 6) including offsets of dykes (fig. 5).
    4) In this region some younger faults with trends nearly parallel to the Yanagase fault show evidence of left-hand displacement (fig. 1).
    5) The stress distribution inducing the earthquake faults is believed to be rather consistent and indigenous to the region, at least during the Quaternary period.

    The Yanagase fault is a remarkable active fault in central Honshu, Japan, extending north-nothwestwards from the northeast of Lake Biwa to the northeast of Tsuruga City.
    Both geomorphological and geological detailed studies have been carried out along the fault zone to clarify the history of its movement especially in Quaternary time.
    A linear fault line valley consisting of four different streams in a straight arrangment is developed along the fault zone over a distance of about 25km, which is recognizable as a lineament in a broad sense. Geomorphic features caused by left-lateral faulting such as shutter ridges, offset streams are detected along the southern part of the lineament. And the west-side block of the fault shows subsiding topographic features such as rather wide alluvial plain around Lake Yago, but the east-side uplifting such as elevated river terraces of two to five steps, composite alluvial fans, high triangular terminal facets and so on.
    The paleozoic system consisting of slate, sandstone, chert, greenstones is sheared along the fault in a zone of a few hundred meters wide, in which rocks are strongly crushed to be transformed into fault gouge in a maximum width 50 meters or so. Porphyrite dykes within the fault zone are also crushed at some localities.
    Fault displacement in late Quaternary fan deposits has been observed at several places in the southern, part of the fault zone. However no evidence of Quaternary fault movement has been found out in the northern part, although the fault zone is overlain by Quaternary fan deposits here and there. Each fault shows different sense of displacement, that is lateral-slip, east-side uplift dip slip and west-side uplift dip slip. The youngest deposit cut by the faults has been dated back to about 4, 000 years B. P. in Carbon-14 age.
    Judging from the west-dip imbrication of gravels observed in the highest terrace deposits along the wind gap east of Nakanogo, the Yogo River had been running once eastward from Nokanogo through the wind gap to Shimo-niyu. The fault movement with west-side subsidence and east-side uplift occured at 80, 000 to 100, 000 years ago along the southern part, seems to have changed its direction to the south as in the present.
    It is concluded the Yanagase fault has moved repeatedly since late Paleozoic time, and has been active in its southern half in late Quaternary time, on the contrary not or scarcely active in the northern part. Its dominant sense of movement in late Quaternary is supposed to be left-lateral, west-side subsidence and east-side uplift.

    Buried wood fragments -2.8m below the surface were measured as 4,500-4,600yBP in the alluvial plain at the southwestern part of Yanagase fault, which extends about 28km with NNW-SSE direction at the NE side corner of Lake Biwa, central Japan. As the former river course from the Lake Yogo lowland to the Nakanogo windgap is adapted as the distinguished fault reference across the Yanagase fault, culumative vertical and leftlateral amounts of displacement during late Quaternary are roughly estimated to be about 300m (west side down) and 0.4- 0.5km, respectively. The approximate age of basal gravels below the Lake Yogo lowland and gravels at the Nakanogo windgap is inferred to be around 0.4 million of years, presuming that alluvial sediments in the lowland have constantly been deposited to the basement. Using this age and amounts of displacement, average vertical and left-lateral slip rates along the Yanagase fault are obtained to be in the order of 0.75-1m and 1.0-1.5m, respectively per thousand of years. The westside down vertical displacement along the Yanagase fault sharply becomes larger to the southward, approaching to the Lake Biwa. This westside subsidence along this fault might has been triggered by the appearance and migration to the present situation of Lake Biwa since the late Quaternary(0.3-0.4my). This left-lateral late Quaternary faulting has simultaneously reactivated diversifiing former topograpy and using the pre-existed fault shattered zone. Although structural, geologic and geometric segmentations along the Yanagase fault zone is proposed by the characteristics of each fault, more detailed informations for these faults are required for the recognition to the earthquake and behavioral segmentaions. And concealed active faults under the alluvial plain are estimated by the photo-interpretation, geomorphological and geologic examinations on the southward extension of the Yanagase fault.

    An influence of Niu dam on sediment runoff and corresponding bed evolution of alluvial reach are investigated in Takatoki river basin based on numerical predictions, supposing an occurrence of a plan size rain-fall event with a large amount of sediment yield due to numerous landslides. Computations are conducted for three cases; present drainage condition without the dam (Case 1), flood control with the dam (Case 2) and no-flood control but with the dam (Case 3), using a specified six years-flood series and the plan size flood is included in the first year. In Case 2 and Case 3, it is supposed that all sediment delivered to the dam site is caught in its storage area. Predicted results suggest that (1) in Case 3, the amount of sediment volume transported from mountain areas into the alluvial reach reduces to about forty percent of the calculated amount in Case 1 and in addition, most of sediment delivered to the reach of flat area is carried from upstream as suspended loads whose grain sizes are smaller than 1mm, (2) bed evolution of the alluvial reach during the flood is influenced by pre-flood reach conditions such as the channel width and bed material as well as by deposition of suspended sediment, (3) Coarse sediment which behaves as bed load in mountain areas does not influence the bed evolution because it is still not propagated during the flood, and (4) the dam reservoir can suppress remarkably the bed aggradation even if the alluvial reach is located far downstream.

    Impacts of Niu-dam on sediment environment of Takatoki river are investigated based on numerical simulations for two cases, long and short terms, using a modified Egashira’s method. Long term case are simulated on sediment transportation, river-bed evolutions, sediment sizes and so on for 30 years using rainfall data series and supposing that no sediment supply takes place due to landslides. Results show that impacts of sediment interception and flood control on river bed lowering and sediment sizes will propagate gradually to downstream and will be less in the downstream farther than 4km from the dam site, while the amount of sediment supply to the alluvial fan head reduces to 60% in comparison to the result without the dam. Short term simulations, which are performed for 6 years period to investigate same impacts as for the long term case but supposing that a large amount of sediment supply takes place from mountain slopes to river reaches, suggest that in the existence of the dam, river bed aggradation is suppressed to about 0.2m in the reaches of alluvial area and on the other hand in the case without the dam is 1.5m at around the fan head and 0.4m in downstream reaches on average.

    With the help of old documents and records, I investigated the houses where shogunal inspectors and their attendants rested and stayed in Echizen in the Tenmei period.
    The houses were the private ones in agricultural districts. The inspectors and their attendants organized three parties of five to seven members. The houses attached conditions to the first room with alcove and ceiling, the second room and another room. They were provided with the first room with toilet and bath, the second room with toilet and bath. Toilet and bath were made temporary and the wall,shoji,fusuma were repaired. Most of the farmhouses of upper class in 1787(Tenmei 7) had the first room with alcove and the second room. One third of the farmhouses had upper toilet and upper bath.

     西南日本福井県中央部に位置する南条山地の主要域には,玄武岩・石灰岩・チャート・泥岩・砂岩などの多様な岩石から構成される堆積岩複合岩体が分布する.南条山地におけるこれらの岩石のうち27地点のチャートについて,含有される放散虫化石の検討を行った.その結果,今庄地域では10地点14試料からSpumellaria目ならびにEntactinaria目が卓越する三畳紀群集とNassellaria目が卓越するジュラ紀群集が産出した.本報告ではこれらの放散虫化石群集を記載するとともに,その種構成に基づき今庄地域に分布するチャートの地質時代は前期三畳紀 (Olenekian?) 〜中期ジュラ紀 (Bajocian) に至ると結論した.

     With the help of old documents and records, I investigated the houses where shogunal inspectors and their attendants stayed, where the occupation Bashaku or Kaisendoiya have in coastal district of Echizen from Enkyo to Tenpho period.
     The houses were made a set of the honjin and the one or two shitayado. The honjin was attached conditions to the first room of toilet and bath, second room, third room, forth room, and two toilet, bath, shikidai, mon, kagodai, and two bannsho of the face and the tailes, kuchi-domebansyo, and nitsukekoya. The shitayado was attached conditions two or three rooms and two toilet and two bath. The wall, floor, shoji, fusuma were repaired, and toilet and bath were made temporary in some houses.

    I investigated the private houses for stay and rest of inspectors in 1838 through the old manuscripts. The summary of this study is as follows: That houses in Fukui clan were meddled in equipment by the organization of constructions. That was selected from the farmhouses of upper class according to precedent, and was provided first room of toilet and bath, second room of toilet and bath, third room of toilet, and agariba, tyumon, kagodai. Its room and equipment was required according to each classes. The owner of its house was burdened with the some cost of repair for that houses.
