Ippen hijiri-e is a picture scroll about a religionist Ippen. However it is different from other picture scroll of hiararch and founder. Ippen's behavior explained in kotobagaki is not visualized concretely and the scenery of precinct which he visited is presented as a visual theme. The aim of this paper is to examine the meaning that representation narrates and the idea of combined representation, through the point of view of beholder, paying attention to kotobagaki digesting and narrating existing literature such as shaji engi, the biographies of hiararch, and Buddhist canon, the scenery of precinct which represents gods and Buddha, and the image of Ippen.
