    Protection of twentieth century architectural heritage is recent world wide concern. This paper concerns the cases in Finland, one of the leading countries in this matter, and especially the heritage of Alvar Aalto, the architect. First, this article introduces the interest for twentieth century heritage in Finland. Second, it researches for the conservation of Alvar Aalto's heritage in the Finnish architectural review “Arkkitehti”. So the paper covers also the activity of Alvar Aalto Foundation, the practical cases of restoration of Finlandia Hall, one of his masterpieces and also international project of restoration of Library of Viipuri, Russia.

    The purpose of the study is to reveal the full picture of the relocation and reconstruction of the Former Imperial Hotel (1923-1968) designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) and to investigate the “preservation of the architectural style” proposed by Yoshiro Taniguchi (1904-1979), the first director of the Museum Meiji-Mura. This paper (part 2) looks at the process behind the preservation movement of the Former Imperial Hotel, which resulted in its relocation, and examines the survey records obtained by Akira Muto laboratory of Kogakuin University and the documentary photography taken by Shindo Akashi laboratory of Waseda University during its dismantling.

    本論文は, 建築学・環境工学の視点に立った生活環境にかかわる生気象学の思想の系譜に基づいて環境作りの問題点を探り, 今後の研究展望と思想について論じたものである.今世紀, 近代建築は工学と共に発展し, 空気調和と人工照明の室内環境調整技術に支えられて人工環境を創ってきた.しかしいま我々に求められているのは, 自然と共生した環境づくりではないかと考えられる.そこで, 人間が生態系のなかでどう生存し他の生物や自然環境と係わってゆくかが探られることこそ, もの作りのなかでは必要である.生気象学的・生気候学的デザインの方法論の確立が健康な建築や都市づくりの中で望まれている.その意味で生気象学は, 生活文化を含めた, 人間の適応能に基づいた低いエネルギーレベルで実現する生活環境のあるべき姿を提言できる数少ない学問分野であると考えられ, 来世紀に向けて担うべき課題は大きい.

     This report aims to illustrate how Japanese architects extrapolated a design theme from roof garden model through analyzing text and actual composition of contemporary Japanese houses with such model as it appeared in architectural publications. Initially, two aspects of the roof garden concept were extracted from explanatory text by architect themselves, and each scheme was then subjected to a “KJ-method” analysis (originated by KAWAKITA Jiro); one is the architect's intention in adopting roof garden, the other is the architect's distinct view of the spatial character on roof garden. Secondly, the actual composition of each house was assessed with regard to vertical and horizontal positioning of the roof garden. Finally, the mediation between each architect's thinking and the final composition has been plotted in terms of this dual classification.

    This research focus on two big element in architecture with criticism, form element and planning element. We aim at considering about the details of relationship between these two elements in the architecture of modern terms. By consideration from the architecture side and the social side of form element, and from the phenomenon side and the planning side of planning element, we placed modern architecture.
    As a result, we got the conclusion as follows. In the early modern term, the relationship between society and architecture become strong, in the middle modern term, the space is formed considering human feeling as important, in the late modern term, the relationship between society and architecture become weak.

    Alvar Aalto approached his architectural style to modernism in search of a new concept of spatial design. He recognized however the difference between the quality of Modern and his own creative sensibility, and took distance from Modern, although Paimio Sanatorium, one of his masterworks, is regarded as a representative work of Modern. Then he changed his design method to synthesize elements of Finnish regionality in his works, while sublimating the modern spatial modeling philosophy to his own creativity. The purpose of this study is to extract the spatial particularity of Aalto's architecture, which becomes clear by examining this process.

    第一次世界大戦後のベルギーにおいて, 造園家のヴァン・デル・スワールメンは当時の多くの郊外住宅地建設で採用された田園郊外の計画に重要な役割を果たした。本研究では, 彼が計画に関与した田園郊外と4編の著述を取り上げて分析することにより, 当時の都市整備における田園郊外の位置付けを明らかにすることを目的とする。その結果, ヴァン・デル・スワールメンは, 田園郊外を都市および地方計画の重要な構成要素として位置づけていたこと, 建築デザイン, 街区構成, 都市および地方計画をベルギーでは初めて段階的に序列だてて全体を構想していたことが明らかになった。

    In almost all the Japanese versions of Mies's inaugural address at AIT the German word, ‘Persönlichkeit,’ was translated as the Japanese word, ‘Kosei,’ and in Japan they have circulated Mies's respect for ‘Kosei’ in architectural education. The meaning of ‘Kosei’ contradicts not only the meaning of the other sentences, but also his other discourses. Investigation into the process of translation from German through English to Japanese shows that there were some subtle differences between them. They derived the unsuitable equivalent, ‘Kosei,’ distinctive character of a person for ‘Persönlichkeit.’ The more appropriate equivalent is ‘Jinkaku,’ the condition of being a person.

    The purpose of this study is to clarify the character of Jørn Utzon's architectural thought from the whole and relative viewpoint. From five writings, 395 important words expressed architectural thought were extracted, and arranged by 76 keywords. They were arranged by 16 middle categories, and also were arranged by five large categories.In conclusion, Utzon's main architectural thought made from [Formal methodology] and [Sensuous methodology] became clear. The other was [Principle] which expressed the idea, and was [View of nature] as a source of the image. On the other hand, there were a few references about [View of the times].

    In this paper, I attempt to make clear the architectural theory and the design method of an famous French modern architect, Andre Lurcat (1894-1970) by an analysis on the plans of apartment housing through 1924-1930. Lurcat refused the prevailing academism and composed his works in the international style, emerging in this period. However his frequent introduction of symmetry both in plan and elevation made his designs look academic ones. Such obvious contradiction between his architectural direction and projected designs was derived from his belief that symmetry could fulfill the economic and social needs in the plans of housing. That is to say, Lurcat used symmetry in the sense of rational design method.

    This study attempts to clarify Dutch architect J.L.M.Lauweriks' career and activities related to the development of the history of modern architecture. As the result it became clear that Lauweriks was very active not only as an architect but also as a theorist, an educator and a designer. Those activities were related closely each other. On the other hand Lauweriks also took part in Dutch modern movement in applied art.

    This paper examines reconstructing Aldo Rossi’s lecture in term of the word la tendenza before establishing the movement called “La Tendenza” after the XV Milan Triennale in 1973. Focusing on the lecture titled “Le teorie della progettazione (The Theories of the Project) “, the paper detects theoretical origin of tendenza during the years when Rossi taught in Politecnico di Milano as professor.

    In those years, he wrote educational articles and articulated L'analisi urbane e la progettazione architettonica (The Urban Analysis and Architectural Project), first published in March 1970, for the results of the academic year of 1968/1969. The book contains four essays written by Rossi, titled “Premessa (Preface)”, “L'obiettivo della nostra ricerca Lezione. (The purpose of our research: Lecture)”, “L'idea di città socialista in architettura (The Idea of Socialist City in Architecture)”, and “Le teorie della progettazione”.

    First, it considers the first volume of I quaderni azzurri (QA01), written in 19 June 1968 as Rossi’s diary. Just before the academic year of 1968/69, he catechized himself and the term tendenza appeared. Also, he associated the idea of tendenza with the term of La teoria della progettazione.

    Second, it deals with the book L'analisi urbane e la progettazione architettonica, in which Rossi presents the term of tendenza for the students and assistants in his Gruppo di ricerca (research group). Judging from

    “Premessa” and “L'obiettivo della nostra ricerca. Lezione”, Rossi demonstrates the idea of tendenza as common theme for the group. Following QA01, Rossi puts importance on scelta e tendenza (choise and tendency) and tries to define tendenza not as a stopgap manifest but as results of plurality of their researches.

    Through “Le teorie della progettazione”, Rossi evaluates the urban projects in the 19th century, for example, Haussmann’s reconstruction of Paris and G.A. Antolini’s Foro Bonaparte Project. For Rossi, Foro Bonaparte represents precise historical moment and una tendenza, for it anticipates modern vision of the city, with absolute force in the prominence on the map as the plan.

    Then, with Paul Klee’s dairy, Rossi explains transformation from una tendenza to la tendenza inside the artist’s state of mind. In his opinion, architecture is only built for dominant class but could become “reactional architecture which could anticipate revolutionary image”. Interestingly, Rossi not only regards Bauhaus as architecture for dominant class which could have become revolutionary but also urges the audience to doubt the dogma of architectural education that succeeds Modernist Movement.

    In the lecture titled “L'idea di città socialista in architettura”, presented in advance of “Le teorie della progettazione”, Rossi reckons abandoned Utopian projects to Modernism, influenced by Carlo Aymonino’s viewpoint on Tony Garnier and that of Leonardo Benevolo on the phalanstère. Finally, in the end of lecture, he cites the phrases of Leon Trotsky in Literature and Revolution (1924). Trotsky explains the art of tendenza in Soviet Union, which battles the compulsion of party’s principles to the artists. In the reversal sense that Rossi defended Stalinist architecture, he also respects the liberty of the state of mind in artist, citing from Trotsky’s phrases.

    Furthermore, on Socialist City, the term tendenza referred by Rossi from 1968 to 1970 can overlap the idea of Città analoga. Rossi points tendenza for the state of mind of artist, which enables us to investigate the process of making own works toward the architecture of tendenza.

    This paper is an investigation of the spatial composition of Richard Neutra's residential buildings focusing on the material and the modular system. The analysis contains, structure, exterior and interior finishing materials, modular system on both plan and section, and composition of elevation. As a result of this analysis, following points are derived: Neutra mainly adopted horizontal window, and gradually used together curtain wall and wall for the composition of elevation. As for the materials, Neutra mainly adopted both plaster and wood, and gradually used with stone or brick. Neutra clearly defined these components of composition which to be succeeded and changed, and transformed his way of composition every 5 year.

    Sur la relation entre les peintures modernes et l'Architecture, N. Pevsner, S. Giedion et L. Benevolo l'ont indique dans Ieur ecrits, "Pioneers of Modern Design", "Space, Time and Architecture" et "Storia dell'Architettura Moderna". Ici, ce qui est vise, c'est la question plus etroite entre les peintures et l'Architecture chez le meme Architect, LE CORBUSIER, d'autant que cela produit une pensee architecturale de l'AGE MODERNE. De sorte que ce sujet nous demande l'interpretation des peintures chez LE, CORBUSIER, ce qui est important, donc, c'est, d'abord, la difference entre les deux Peintres, OZENFANT et LE CORBUSIER (JEANNERET). Car, on pourrait y examiner une possibilite qui atteint la pensee architecturale de l'AGE MODERNE. En resume de ce petit ouvrage, on peut dire que OZENFANT a dessine la figure d'une nature morte sans poids, d'ailleurs, JEANNERET LE CORBUSIER a essaye de unir chaque nature morte, independamment dessinee, qui porte le poids, dans une mecanique. Il serait donc possible d'indiquer l'existence ontologique de chaque nature morte et, en meme temps, une notion dynamique qui l'unit. Dans ce canal, JEANNERET LE CORBUSIER a produit une notion de "Champ dynamique", qui deviendra le vocabulaire architectural chez lui.

    At the conference of the German Society for Housing Reform in 1927, Luebbert showed the six housing development models including two- to five- story dwellings and emphasized the economical advantages of a two-story dwelling model on the basis of the cost analysis results. The purpose of this paper is to examine the arguments of his opinion. In one of his opinion, the low-rise dwellings didn't require the high standard of the structural strength and the sound insulation. This paper points out that his opinion derived from his arbitrary assumption that the two-story dwelling model had neither the basement nor the attic.

    Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht zunachst, anhand konkreter Beispiele von Bauwerken des Neubarockstils sowie der Dokumente der damaligen Zeit unter Berucksichtigung unterschiedlicher Formen, den Barockbegriff des Spathistorismus, bes. den der Architektur im Neubarockstil, zu untersuchen, der sich vor allem durch die Nachahmung des barocken Stils auszeichnet. In einem zweiten Teil befasst sie sich mit dem Verhaltnis zwischen dem Barockbegriff des modernen Architekten Otto Wagners und dem des Neubarockstils. Der Spathistorismus lasst zwei Verstandnisse des Barockbegriffes erkennen : zum einen die Erfassung des Barocks als Nachahmung des Formelements, zum anderen als Nachahmung der barocken Wirkung. Vor allem letzteres Verstandnis ist von Bedeutung, da es dem Barockbegriff Wagners entspricht. Gleichzeitig jedoch lasst sich ein Bruch zwischen dem Barockbegriff des Spathistorismus und dem Wagners feststellen, insofern als sich der Spathistorismus spater mehr und mehr zu den Formen der Vergangenheit hingezogen fuhlte. Betrachtet man den Barockbegriff im Spathistorismus und bei Wagner im zeitlichen Wandel, stellt man fest, dass Wagners Barockbegriff in immer geringerm Masse von Wagner selbst gepragt, sondern vielmehr durch die Widerspiegelung des Barockbegriffs des Spathistorismus herausgebildet wurde.

    The purpose of this paper is to make an analysis of Le Corbusier's architectural thought and the works in 1920's focusing on the folklore. Le Corbusier had a relation with the progressive avant-garde from the beginning in 20's, and he participated in avant-garde movement, but his architectural thought has the characteristic that is incompatible with the avant-garde, and the architectural works of his 1930's are explained in a concept such as regionalism and the vernacular. It was made clear that this characteristic tendency of the works of his 1930's is also seen in the works of his 1920's, by an analysis of his works based on his work explanation.

    As compared the architecture of Kaitakushi with illustrations of the architectural pattern books from overseas published in the middle of the 19th century, and former owned by Kaitakushi, there are robust similalities between them. First, the architectural engineers of Kaitakushi began to study the western-style architecture by copying out illustrations of the pattern books to build a house of Kaitakushi in 1873, later, they mastered the western-style architecture through the pattern books. Finally, they dealt with the illustrations as elemnts to compose architecture by harmonizing with the architectural skill they had cultivated. Those architecture could be said 'early western-style architecture.'
