The methods of synthesis of ion exchange membranes, and the applications of the membranes in organic synthetic chemistry are reviewed.
The membranes are classified into three categories cross-linked polymer membranes, linear polymer membranes, and specific membranes.
The applications consist of demineralization of aqueous solutions of organic compounds, electrodialysis of organic ions, substitution reactions of organic salts, and organic electrode reactions using the membranes as barriers.
