The purpose of this study was to evaluate the answers to the questions about oral health care, periodontal diseases and the relation to dental clinic.
The questionnaire concerning “the conciousness of oral health and the actual condition of dental treatment” was sent to 4, 000 inhabitants and 1, 000 bank clerks as a part of the epidemiological survey of periodontal disease.
The percentages of answers obtained were 35.5 and 62.5 respectively.
They were analyzed according to sex, age group and by group of inhabitants and bank clerks
The following results were obtained.
1) About 96 percent of the people recognized the importance of dental care, but only a few had prophylactic treatments.
2) Many people of over 50-years-old complained of reduced function of mastication.
3) One-half of the people was concious of gingival bleeding and swelling and twenty percent felt a tendency of tooth mobility.
The ratio of people who had mobile teeth increased with age.
4) About one-half of the people recognized the necessity to have dental treatment and oneeighth was actually having dental treatments.
This survey seems to show the general conciousness of oral health and the actual dental condition in Japan.
