Critiques on leisure education and scholastic ability occur, and the PISA survey's reading ability ranks close to the OECD average, causing a PISA shock. Among them, "scholastic ability" is highlighted. What is the background behind leisure education and criticism of academic decline? I will examine how PISA-type academic ability was adopted when shifting from criticism to PISA-type academic ability. We will consider how PISA-style scholastic ability, especially PISA-type reading ability, is positioned in the Japanese language department of elementary school.
