Tennis judgement is a very exciting occupation and a stressful one in any stage.The purpose of this study, therefore, is to investigate the sources of stress for international tennis umpires. Five umpires with International Tennis Association budges of gold, silver, or bronze were interviewed about the stress they experienced as international umpires and asked to identify specific sources of stress. At the time of the interview, the average age of the participating umpires was 46.1 yr. with a range of 37 to 52 yr. Qualitative methodology was utilized in this investigation. An interview guide, comprising a series of open-ended and guided questions was developed for this investigation. These raw data responses were content analyzed; the three researchers
discussed and came to a consensus on the grouping of the raw data responses, transforming them into meaningful subcategories and larger groupings. These raw data responses were content analyzed. Dimensions of stressors were identified, including arguing with players, pressure, time demands, financial problem, fear of failure, interpersonal and peer conflicts, prolonged travel for expedition and object loss. This study examined the sources of stress experienced by tennis umpires.
Overall, the present investigation revealed that the umpires in the present sample experienced similar sources of stress as other sport officials from previous research.
