In 2019, the government proposed the promotion of STEAM education, and since then various activities have been conducted in schools and outside of schools; however, the percentage of students with science degrees remains low compared to OECD countries. STEAM education is advanced in Japan as inquiry learning and programming education, but lack of teacher expertise and instructional time, as well as facilities, have been highlighted. In addition, events such as robot building and hands-on experiments are being held outside of schools, but many of these are one-off events and lack the provision of ongoing learning opportunities. In order to solve these issues, it is important for industry, government, and academia to collaborate to provide continuous learning opportunities that are rooted in the local community.
