    Incoherent neutron scattering is a powerful tool to investigate the dynamics of biomolecules and water. In this article, a new dynamical model called “

    Matryoshka
    model” is first described, which provides detailed information on the motions contained in the phospholipid molecules based on the scattering spectra. In the latter half of the article, a relationship between water activity and water mobility, and the effects of pressure and hydration on protein dynamics are discussed. These studies demonstrate the advancement of analytical methods which provide ever more detailed information for elucidating the mechanism of biological functions.

    本稿は、ロシアを代表する民芸品として観光客に人気のおみやげマトリョーシカを事例に、観光みやげにかかわる人やモノの移動の連関について考察するものである。これまでの観光研究では、おみやげは当該の観光地で生産されていることが前提とされ、訪れた観光客が自らのホームへとそれを持ち帰る過程や、おみやげになることによって生じる意味や形態の変化に主たる焦点が当てられてきた。しかし実際に観光地で販売されているおみやげの多くは、必ずしも地域固有のものであるとは限らず、生産のプロセスにおいて時間的にも空間的にも様々な越境を経てその場所へとたどり着いた商品であることも少なくない。またおみやげをその「本来の姿」との対比で論じることで、観光という移動のために生産されたモノを規定する論理については十分な検討が行われてこなかった。その結果既存の研究では、おみやげをめぐる複数の移動の経路や、異なる社会的文脈においておみやげが経験する意味や価値の変化の在り方をとらえきれていなかったと考えられる。
    それに対して本研究では、マトリョーシカというおみやげを観光客が持ち帰る前の「本来の姿」、いわばそのルーツとの対比で論じるのではなく、マトリョーシカが過去100年余りの時間の中で経験してきた、幕末の日本から20世紀初頭のロシアやフランス、さらに現代の中国やベトナム、マレーシア、そして再び日本へと至る世界規模での一連の移動のルートを素描することを試みた。そこから明らかになったのは、おみやげは観光客の移動のみに付随する現象ではなく、より広範な人やモノ、イメージの移動のネットワークにおける移動の途上で、絶えずその形態や意味を再構成させながら存在するモノだということである。そしておみやげが経験する一連の移動をめぐる考察は、真正なモノ/ニセモノ、ローカルなモノ/グローバルなモノ、商品/非商品といった区分がゆらぐ過程の分析となるのである。

    In geologic time scale, flow of secondary migration of hydrocarbon is controlled by capillary (resistive) and buoyancy (driving) forces. The relationship between capillary threshold pressure of formation and buoyancy of hydrocarbons is considered as one of the most important aspects for petroleum system analysis. As high quality 3D seismic data is acquired in common, high resolution 3D basin simulation of capillary-dominated multi-phase flow regimes is the effective technique to realize the generation, migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons in reservoir scale. Two case studies are carried out to reveal the usefulness of 3D basin simulation in reservoir and new exploration ideas based on the seal evaluation. Case studies indicate that the invasion percolation for simulation algorithm enables to realize the migration pathways controlled by sand distribution, seal capacity and trap geometry. Working hypothesis of
    Matryoshka
    pressure model also enables that the reevaluation of the pressure data in discovered fields will produce some remaining exploration potential, even in mature fields and basins.

    Diseases and healing are fully determined by the behaviour of molecules. In turn, all molecular reactions are determined by the shape of electron density clouds, forming the actual “bodies” of molecules. Molecular shapes which are mirror images but not superimposable on each other, just as left and right hands, are called “chiral”. Such chiral molecule pairs have equal energies and equal stabilities, but they fit differently into various surroundings. The left handed variants of amino acids dominate in life forming molecules on Earth, and the right-handed forms are “misfits” in living tissues. The purpose of this research is the detailed understanding of molecular processes causing left-to-right mutations of amino acids and peptides, some of which processes do contribute to cataract in the eye.

    We have previously demonstrated conjugation of Escherichia coli into vacuoles of the protozoal ciliate (Tetrahymena thermophila). This indicated a possible role of ciliates in evoking bacterial quorum sensing, directly connecting bacterial survival via accumulation in the ciliate vacuoles. We therefore assessed if ciliates promoted bacterial autoinducer (AI)-2 accumulation with vacuole formation, which controls quorum sensing. E. coli AI-2 accumulation was significantly enhanced in the supernatants of a mixed culture of ciliates and bacteria, likely depending on ciliate density rather than bacterial concentration. As expected, AI-2 production was significantly correlated with vacuole formation. The experiment with E. coli luxS mutants showed that ciliates failed to enhance bacterial AI-2 accumulation, denying a nonspecific phenomenon. Fluorescence microscopy revealed accumulation of fragmented bacteria in ciliate vacuoles, and, more importantly, expulsion of the vacuoles containing disrupted bacteria into the culture supernatant. There was no increase in the expression of luxS (encoding AI-2) or ydgG (a transporter for controlling bacterial export of AI-2). We conclude that ciliates promote bacterial AI-2 accumulation in a mixed culture, via accumulation of disrupted bacteria in ciliate vacuoles followed by expulsion of the vacuoles, independently of luxS or ydgG gene induction. This is believed to be the first demonstration of a relationship between E. coli AI-2 dynamics and ciliates. In the natural environment, ciliate biotopes may provide a survival advantage to bacteria inhabiting such biotopes, via evoking quorum sensing.

    Globally-coupled low-density parity check (GC-LDPC) codes have shown great application potential in the error correction of NAND Flash memories. However, the existing LDPC encoder architectures cannot fully use the structure characteristic of GC-LDPC codes. In this letter, focusing on the particular globally-coupled structure, we propose a memory-efficient multiplex-parallel GC-LDPC encoding method and corresponding efficient GC-LDPC encoder architecture. By reusing the local submatrices and optimizing the operation order of piecewise parity bits, the proposed encoding method has low storage overhead and encoding complexity. Then, based on the designed extended shift-register-adder-accumulator (E-SRAA) unit and barrel shifter, we optimize the operator scheduling of the proposed GC-LDPC encoding method when its local encoding is different. The implementation results under various FPGA technologies show that the proposed GC-LDPC encoder architecture achieves a markedly higher throughput-to-resource overhead ratio than existing similar LDPC encoder architectures. Meanwhile, it can meet the bandwidth requirement of ONFI 6.0.

    In this work, we establish a heuristic strategy, the purpose of which is enhancing the posing of new problems in the school context. The strategy is supported by a cognitive framework consisting of six stages: Selecting, Classifying, Associating, Searching, Verbalizing, and Transforming. The first five actions make up an essentially creative process, while the last stage is present within the nucleus of the previous ones. This provides the process with a high level of complexity. Compactly, we call the strategy SCASV+T. We reflect on the heuristic nature of the strategy, as well as the didactic actions that are required for its implementation. We also describe a didactic situation in elementary geometry, where the posing of new problems based on one already solved is discussed. The analysis is carried out with students who are studying a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education, who know the strategy and try to put it into practice collectively. Analysis and discussion are led by a professor, who provides suggestions and demonstrates the importance of each action in the development of heuristic reflection.

    2014年3月16日,ウクライナのクリミア自治共和国で,ロシアの一部となるかウクライナに残るかを問うレファレンダムが実施された。ウクライナ政府はレファレンダムを無効としたが,クリミアは9割以上がロシアへの編入に賛成したとして独立決議を採択,ロシアと同国の一部となる条約を締結した。クリミアでは1991年と1994年にもレファレンダムを行っており,ウクライナからの分離運動を展開していったが,その特徴は,ロシアとの「再合同」を最終的な目標としていたこと,ソ連という特殊な国家の負の遺産が介在していたこと,自決権の行使をめぐる問題が「入れ子」のように重層的な構造であること,そして対外的な要因が影響していたことなどである。本論では,これらの点を明らかにすることによって,2014年のクリミア・レファレンダムがもつ意味を考える。

     Oil and gas column heights and accumulation status within the reservoir can be understood from the relationship between top seal capacity and height of trap (level of spill point). In previous studies, such evaluations were limited to hydrostatic conditions. This paper presents a study on abnormally high pressure conditions where pressure increases stepwise in sandstone layers toward the core of a folded structure, as in the case study offshore Sabah, Malaysia. First, the stepwise convex-upward shaped oil water contact (OWC) is investigated in the field, from which it is concluded that abnormally high pressures caused the conditions. A gradually progressive pressure increase toward the core axis within the folded structure contributed to the reduction in the column height of oil accumulated at the central part, showing a stepwise upwardly convex OWC. Second, an attempt is made to quantitatively predict conditions by applying data from only the exploration well. Estimated oil reserves based on this form of accumulation were found to be more than double that assumed by the conventional flat OWC. This concept will widen the scope of applications for future oil exploration.

    Named Data Networking (NDN) is a proposed future Internet architecture that shifts the fundamental abstraction of the network from host-to-host communication to request-response for named, signed data-an information dissemination focused approach. This paper describes a general design for receiver-driven, real-time streaming data (RTSD) applications over the current NDN implementation that aims to take advantage of the architecture's unique affordances. It is based on experimental development and testing of running code for real-time video conferencing, a positional tracking system for interactive multimedia, and a distributed control system for live performance. The design includes initial approaches to minimizing latency, managing buffer size and Interest retransmission, and adapting retrieval to maximize bandwidth and control congestion. Initial implementations of these approaches are evaluated for functionality and performance results, and the potential for future research in this area, and improved performance as new features of the architecture become available, is discussed.

    This is a guide to National Geographic's Our World, the graded reader series of 54 books from Level 1 to Level 6. It seems that the first level is for small children just starting elementary school, but as the level goes up, the series books become more and more appropriate for foreign learners of English, especially junior high school or even high school students. Actually, Lee Wagner's Better Lives with Bionics from Level 6 is worth reading due to both the subjunctive mood and the theme of modern technology, like "Imagine if you lost a hand. Wouldn't you wish for an artificial hand that could hold, touch, and feel just like the hand you lost?"
    As the famous publisher's well-chosen title Our World shows, this series is made up from the ideal viewpoint of world citizens, regardless of race, religion, or sex. If you missed seeing the publisher's name, you would not know in what country these books were published. In fact, despite the fact that the books were printed in the United States, people could believe that they came out in Japan because one of the authors is a Japanese woman named Yuko OKAMURA, and in the series there are pictures of a Japanese-style house, a Japanese traditional musical instrument shakuhachi, and a Japanese girl dancing the Bon festival dance.
    The fact is, Our World series can be read with familiarity by any people all over the world just because these books mention your country and unique culture somewhere. Unlike the outdated 20th century English textbooks by pure white, English-speaking writers, this series is a work of worldwide collaboration for world citizens, focusing on a diversity of races and their cultures including white people in the United States and the United Kingdom instead of these native speakers of English and their Western civilization only.
    Our World books consist mainly of old folktales and legends from around the world such as Hare Is Scared from Africa, Stone Soup from France, The Four Blind Men from India, Mouse Deer in the Rain Forest from Indonesia, The Mirror from Korea, The Empty Pot from China, Rhodopis from Egypt, The Green Rabbit from Mexico, How Tiger Got His Stripes from Vietnam, Two Brothers, Two Rewards from Japan, The Tailor and His Coat from Russia, and so forth. Compared with other publishers' series, these stories are freshly unknown to the average reader, so even adults will find them fascinating, impressed with their unique but understandable ways of thinking.
    As supplements to the above-mentioned folk stories, modern-day, curious related facts are described with wonderful photographs at the last pages of each book. Whether young or old, you will realize that our world is quite interesting, surely wanting to know more about it through the international language, English.

    Quantization of spacetime by means of finite dimensional matrices is the basic idea of fuzzy spaces. There remains an issue of quantizing time, however, the idea is simple and it provides an interesting interplay of various ideas in mathematics and physics. Shedding some light on such an interplay is the main theme of this dissertation. The dissertation roughly separates into two parts. In the first part, we consider rather mathematical aspects of fuzzy spaces, namely, their construction. We begin with a review of construction of fuzzy complex projective spaces CP^κ (κ=1, 2,・・・) in relation to geometric quantization. This construction facilitates defining symbols and star products on fuzzy CP^κ. Algebraic construction of fuzzy CP^κ is also discussed. We then present construction of fuzzy S^4, utilizing the fact that CP^3 is an S^2 bundle over S^4. Fuzzy S^4 is obtained by imposing an additional algebraic constraint on fuzzy CP^3. Consequently it is proposed that coordinates on fuzzy S^4 are described by certain block-diagonal matrices. It is also found that fuzzy S^8 can analogously be constructed. In the second part of this dissertation, we consider applications of fuzzy spaces to physics. We first consider theories of gravity on fuzzy spaces, anticipating that they may offer a novel way of regularizing spacetime dynamics. We obtain actions for gravity on fuzzy S^2 and on fuzzy CP^2 in terms of finite dimensional matrices. Application to M(atrix) theory is also discussed. With an introduction of extra potentials to the theory, we show that it also has new brane solutions whose transverse directions are described by fuzzy S^4 and fuzzy CP^3. The extra potentials can be considered as fuzzy versions of differential forms or fluxes, which enable us to discuss compactification models of M(atrix) theory. In particular, compactification down to fuzzy S^4 is discussed and a realistic matrix model of M-theory in four-dimensions is proposed.

    Graphical models provide a principled way to take advantage of independence constraints for probabilistic and causal modeling, while giving an intuitive graphical description of “qualitative features” useful for these tasks. A popular graphical model, known as a Bayesian network, represents joint distributions by means of a directed acyclic graph (DAG). DAGs provide a natural representation of conditional independence constraints, and also have a simple causal interpretation. When all variables are observed, the associated statistical models have many attractive properties. However, in many practical data analyses unobserved variables may be present. In general, the set of marginal distributions obtained from a DAG model with hidden variables is a much more complicated statistical model: the likelihood of the marginal is often intractable; the model may contain singularities. There are also an infinite number of such models to consider.
    It is possible to avoid these difficulties by modeling the observed marginal directly. One strategy is to define a model by means of conditional independence constraints induced on the observed marginal by the hidden variable DAG; we call this the ordinary Markov model. This model will be a supermodel that contains the set of marginal distributions obtained from the original DAG. Richardson and Spirtes (2002) and Evans and Richardson (2013a) gave parametrizations of this model in the Gaussian and discrete case, respectively.
    However, it has long been known that hidden variable DAG models also imply nonparametric constraints which generalize conditional independences; these are sometimes called “Verma Constraints”. In this paper we describe a natural extension of the ordinary Markov approach, whereby both conditional independences and these generalized constraints are used to define a nested Markov model. The binary nested Markov model may be parametrized via a simple extension of the binary parametrization of the ordinary Markov model of Evans and Richardson (2013a). We also give evidence for a characterization of nested Markov equivalence for models with four observed variables. A consequence of this characterization is that, in some instances, most structural features of hidden variable DAGs can be recovered exactly when a single generalized independence constraint holds under the distribution of the observed variables.
