This study investigates the communication needs of Japanese university students participating in the Hiroshima-Hawaii Cultural Exchange Project. The students spend several months studying Hawaiian culture and history before traveling to Hawaii; however, no English language training has been provided to participants since the project’s inception in 2013. To address this gap, a needs analysis (NA) was conducted to inform the development of a taskbased English curriculum tailored to the participants’ language requirements. Data were collected from various stakeholders, including students, coordinators, administrators, and domain experts, through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. A thematic analysis of 22 interviews identified 10 target tasks relevant to students’ communicative goals, focusing on Hawaiian culture, history, and practical skills. A subsequent questionnaire assessed task difficulty and priority. The results revealed that students sought increased interaction and listening practice, prioritizing practical tasks such as using public transportation and making okonomiyaki. In contrast, faculty members emphasized fundamental aspects, such as selfintroductions and small talk. Notably, students who had visited Hawaii emphasized different tasks than those who had not. This study recommends specific target tasks for exchange programs within a task-based language teaching syllabus and underscores the significance of NA in syllabus design, advocating its systematic implementation.

The 19th century witnessed the creation of modern scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, and geology. The demarcation of these disciplines also highlighted areas of science that did not fall neatly into a single discipline, but which were susceptible to the analytical tools of several better defined sciences. One "border science" that witnessed significant development alongside̶and in between̶physics, geology, chemistry, and meteorology was geophysics̶the application of the laws and techniques of these other sciences to studies of the Earth. Three main kinds of geophenomena attracted a large share of the attention: Earth's magnetism, earthquakes, and the relation of solar radiation to atmospheric movement and to electromagnetic effects in Earth's atmosphere and elsewhere. This story is best developed in the European and American contexts, but this article emphasizes that geophysical sciences were also pursued successfully in Japan. The arrival of geophysics on the scene at just the time that Japan launched the modernization associated with Meiji restoration meant that this science found especially fertile ground there for institutional development and for discovery. Between about 1880 and 1920 Japan went from having just a few "magneticians," seismologists, and atmospheric physicists to have a well-developed community with a rich record of activity.

In Japan, a national interregional travel demand survey has been conducted since 1990, but it has some limitations related to measuring seasonal demand variation as well as collecting trip frequency. A new survey was proposed and carried out in 2015 and early 2016 to capture travel demand and trip frequency in one year. To explore new survey data, in this study, a model, using eigenvector spatial filters specification, is developed to estimate interregional travel demand across the four seasons. As a result, the significance is seen in all likelihood ratio tests in all considered models, which proves that the spatial filter models are preferable to the unfiltered ones. The explanatory variables in each season have significantly different effects on travel demand, which would not appear in the model with cross-sectional data. For further studies, some remaining issues should be solved such as adding time effect or integration of more impedance variables into the model, developing specific models for each purpose or each travel mode, or an overall model considering a seasonal dummy variable.

This study focuses on Shiramizu waterfall in Shirakawa Village, and clarifies the changes in people's perception of the waterfall based on a literature survey. Shiramizu waterfall was already famous in the Meiji period, and was praised as one of the "Three famous waterfalls of Japan" for its abundant water volume and straight fall, and was designated as a natural monument of Gifu Prefecture. In response to the construction of the Miboro No. 2 Power Plant dam, there was an active campaign for the designation of the area as a national park and for the protection of nature. The scenery of Shiramizu waterfall was described as a symbol of the campaign. As a result, the area around the waterfall was not destroyed, but relative attention is considered to have decreased to this day. Although Shirakawa Village's Gassho-style houses has become a famous tourist attraction as a World Heritage Site, the number of visitors to the Shirakawa Village side of the Hakusan National Park is relatively small. It is necessary to consider the utilization of Shiramizu waterfall, not only as a tourist resource, but also to inform the villagers more widely.

Abstract: With the continuing publication of the complete works of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels (Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe, MEGA), a bulk of new material concerning Marxʼs studies of economic crises has been made available-with further releases expected to follow. These publications have revealed Marxʼs enormous efforts to examine in detail every economic cri-sis through which he lived. The most prominent examples are the three Books of Crisis (Kris-enhefte), which he compiled in 1857-58 amidst the first truly global economic crisis. This paper sets out to, first, provide an overview of new MEGA-texts regarding Marxʼs studies of contemporaneous 19th century revulsions. In the main part, a closer look will be taken at the origin of Marxʼs crisis studies in the 1840s. A comparison between his notes on James Millʼs Elements of Political Economy, written in the Paris Notebooks (1844), and his excerpts from John Stuart Millʼs Essays on Some Unsettled Questions of Political Economy, taken in his Manchester Notebooks (1845), reveals Marxʼs changing stance on classical political econo-myʼs ʻgeneral glut controversy,ʼ i.e., the debate over the (im)possibility of overproduction cri-ses in commodity-producing societies. In between his stays in Paris and Manchester, Marx took extensive notes on the works of Simonde de Sismondi in his Brussels Notebooks (1845), which played a major role in his break from anthropological-essentialist thinking.
