The aim of this study is to explore the educational value of the traditional Ainu "Yar-su" (a type of pot made of tree barks) for children's appreciation and craftwork in formative art education. The author's previous study focused upon clarifying the educational value of Yar-su by looking at the process of making the pot ; collecting material, making the pot, using the pot. The present study attempts to show the value of Yar-su by observing what the participants of the Ainu Art-Craft Workshop for Family were able to learn. In the author's previous study, three ways how the Yar-su can contribute to formative art education were shown ; to develop the ability to formative art skills making the best use of natural material, to develop respect towards nature, to develop respect towards other cultures. The present study aims to show how these three strengths of the Yar-su can explain the success of the Ainu Art-Craft Workshop for Family held at the Asahikawa Life Museum on August 3, 1999 (instructed by Mr. Mitsuru Sugimura and Mrs. Fusa Sugimura). In the Ainu Art-Craft Workshop for Family, all the participants were able to make usable Yar-su and learn about the respect that the Ainu people paid to nature, the respect that underlies the making of the Yar-su. Furthermore, the participants developed interest in the Ainu language, which they had rarely paid attention to. It is suggested that the experience of the Yar-su making helped the participants develop forma-tive art skills making the best use of natural material, as well as the respect to nature, and the respect to other cultures.
