When translating the second edition of Organizations into Japanese, I identified numerous errors in the descriptions and bibliography. In addition, the typology of organizational theory propositions based on differences in assumptions was fundamentally consistent with “a typology of modes of individual adaptation” (Merton, 1938), which developed two decades earlier. Notably, Type 2 in this typology, which addresses the motivational and attitudinal aspects of human behavior, later influenced the development of Vroom’s expectancy theory and Deci’s intrinsic motivation research, notwithstanding numerous errors and confused references. I would like to point out that the misunderstanding regarding the approach–avoidance conflict in psychology remained uncorrected in the second edition.
