Radical polymerization is one of the most widely used polymerization methods both in academic research and industry, because the polymerization is amenable to various monomers with polar groups or ionic groups and there is no need to rigorously purified solvents and monomers. Since the 1990s, tremendous developments have been achieved in controlled/“living” radical polymerization, which allowed the precise control of primary structure of the producing polymers including molecular weight, polydispersity, and end-terminal structure. Such controlled/”living” radical polymerization has become one of the most useful tools as the method for designing polymers precisely. This article deals the fundamental characteristics of radical polymerization as well as the basic concepts and recent advances in controlled/“living” radical polymerization, in particular, the representative systems of atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP), reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT)polymerization, and nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization (NMP).The author hopes the reader to deepen their understanding of the relationship between the basic principles of radical chemistry and polymerization, which will lead to the development of new material through controlled/“living” radical polymerization.
