This paper aims to clarify the meaning of the"scienza"in Vincenzo Scamozzi, as compared with that of Alberti or Leonardo da Vinci. For Scamozzi, who was an architect and a theorist in the 16th century Italy, "scienza" was by far the most important concept in his architectural theory. Scamozzi tried to establish his own architectural theory by four principles, that is to say "scienza", "invenzione", "disegno" and "peritia dell'arte". Above all, "scienza" is the most important principle of them, and it has an effect that controls the functions of the other principles.
