In this paper, I attempt to make clear the architectural theory and the design method of a famous French modern architect, Andre Lurcat (1894-1970) by a study on the relation between the symmetry by which he composes a lot of his works in elevation on the plans of apartment housing through 1934-1965, and the communism to which he devotes himself from beginning of the 1930's to his later years. His design method about the symmetry altered with a change of his ideology. The obvious relation was found by three points of view as follows: firstly, a change of the description about Lurgat's communism in his own writings, secondly, a change of architectural theory about symmetry in his two writings both "architecture" published in 1929 and "Formes, composition et lois d'harmonie" in 1953-57, and thirdly, a change of the design method about symmetry on the plans of apartment housing before and after 1934 when he left to U.S.S.R.
