Abstract
The history of Shin-chu could be examined in five different period based on literature (Dannshoei Ting.Jyh). That is (1) Period of Immigrant Settlements, (2) Period of Bamboo Fortification, (3) Period without Fortification, (4) Period of Mud-walled Fortification, and (4) Period of Stone Fortification and Twin-walled-city. The following historical facts have been disclosed. (1) The building of bamboo forification had a close relationship with riots. (2) It was brought to light that the bamboo fortification was not a portotype of city wall in Taiwan. (3) The immigrants had built fortification enclosing their settlement for self-defense. Therefor, city wall appeared in non-geometric form. Finally, the following result was elucidated that not only the immigrant leaders contributed money for the construction, but also commoners were forced to pay a larger balance.
